Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sweatpants are dangerous

It's usually pretty cold here in Ireland so I generally wear sweat pants over my cycling shorts. The first day I did this they got caught in the gears, very dangerous. From then on I was carefull to make sure they were zipped in at the ankles etc. Still, it seems pretty dangerous and sometimes Im even twisting out my foot from the pedal a bit to avoid contact. I forsee a major accident if I don't mend my ways.

Have sweatpants gone horribly wrong for anybody here?

^^^^....seems like a no brainer to use a velcro strap to restrain the sucker, if you don't have more appropriate garb.

I wear knee warmers or leg warmers when it is cold... loose clothing is generally not a good idea.

It always seems to be the right leg too. Might get myself a pair of longs for the winter.

Loose clothing is generally a bad idea. I've ripped many pants due to them getting caught in the chain (pre-hardcore cycling).

Now that I also train on a fixie, loose clothing is a real no-no.

Try getting one of those reflective bands that fasten with velcro. It'll reign in the pants and give you a bit more visability too.

I've worn sweats on the bike quite a bit. On the gear side I twist the pants leg around my ankle and hold them in place with a toe clip strap. Never had a problem.

Try the velcro band as others stated. I do that if I have to wear pants or sweats etc... A no brainer for safety and, you get to maintain your pants!
