Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bianchi Ultegra

Trawling the eBay listings again today when I stumbled upon this gem. A Bianchi Veloce kitted out with Ultegra 9. Who does this? Why would you profane a Bianchi Veloce with fishing tackle?

Umm the bike you linked to has 105 everywhere except the FD.

Well, I probably committed something akin to raising cain - put a mix of 105/ultegra/DA9 components on a Bianchi San Lorenzo then - but the rationale for that and the Veloce build above is pretty simple: Budget

It's really easy to find last season and slightly used Shimano parts... and in my case, I was trying to stay under $1k for a bike, so I spent $600 on the frame/wheels/seat/bars/rear DA cassette and then filled in the rest of the details with slightly lower rung equipment.

The bike is incredibly smooth and quick, even with the cheap stuff.

105 or Ultegra. Doesn't matter. The point is that Bianchi Veloce has always been mated with Campy Veloce groups, no? FWIW, I have 105 on a Volpe.

Gcasillo...you will start a riot with a thread like this because there are many Ultegra loyalists on the board but have to agree with you when it comes to certain bikes. Bianchis should have a Campag gruppo IMHO as you suggest...what my Veloce came with...a Veloce 10s driveline. In fact...have mine apart as we speak...stripped it down for a thorough cleaning..detail and wax the frame...clean and touch up the true on the wheels...remove the chain for a little shake and bake...etc. As you can see, I removed the cranks and am replacing the Veloce triple with a new Veloce 53/39 double with 172.5mm crank length as God intended.
Cheers,
George

Nice. Yeah, just to balance things out, this would be like slapping Record 10 carbon on a Trek Madone. With "SHIMANO" on the chainstay no less. Just some things that don't mix well. For example, Kentucky and football. California and cheap gas. Kansas and beachfont property. Dogs and cats. You know?

Not trying to start something, but share a snicker amongst us Campy snobs.

Thanks guys...agree horses for courses....certain gruppo's seem to match certain frames better. Honestly I would love to have a venerable Madone frame with complete Record group and Eurus wheelset...would cover up the Shimano paint logo with carbon tape ...I know sacrilege in reverse.
To me...with my background...I enjoy wrenching and building bikes as much as riding...well almost.
Cheers,
George
