Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Eggbeater Cleat Problems?

It seems like I wear out my eggbeater cleats really fast ... just started blowing out of my 2nd pair last night ... not a good thing in a 23 mpg pace line. It usually happens about 1:00 on the pedal cycle as I'm pushing forward over the top on the right side and my foot flies forward, then the pedal hits into the loose heel nice and hard. Happened 3 times last night and the guy behind me was not happy, needless to say!

Both sets have gone around 3500 miles and I can feel a definate groove in the brass. Does this seem like a really quick wear interval? I've heard the Quattro cleats use a harder metal and wear longer?

Eggbeater cleats are made from a soft brass and wear out pretty quickly, especially if you have a wobbly pedal stroke. 3000 miles isn't bad. You can tell when they're starting to wear out from the grooves on the sides of the cleat.

Don't know if Quattro cleats are any different. I would be suprised if they are.

3500 miles is acceptable wear for a cleat. 3500 miles is NOT "really fast". Better to wear the cleat than wearing the pedal.

most eb users on here suggest using the quattro cleats.. i'm just waiting for mine to wear out before getting the quattro cleats.

can't confirm if the material used in the quattro last longer or not. my guess is it's because the quattro cleat has the plastic casing that surrounds it.. so u don't end up walking on the cleat itself as much as the standard cleat version.

It's my right side that always wears out because I have a pretty weird pedal stroke on that side from major knee surgery then infection that drastically limits mobility in right knee.

I'll give the quattros a try ... but my wear happens on the inside of the cleat, not on the bottom.

Is 3-4k wear intervals what you would see on other clipless types also?

Rotate your cleat 180 degrees on the same shoe. CB Cleats are the same front and back and I've been able to get more use out of my cleats by doing this.

I tried rotating them 180* ... got me another 300 or so miles before I started blowing out again.

How 'bout switching cleats on to the other shoe? It sounds like the right cleats wears out faster than the left so this may give you more cleat life but it changes your clip out angle.
I've found CB cleats on eBay for $20 or so...

Just went and swapped side to side ... the change in angle won't be a big deal. That will probably buy me a few more weeks, enough time to get some replacements. Thanks!

Normal retail price for Crank cleats is $20/pair. Just replace the one that wears out. If one wears out twice as often as the other, then replace that one twice as often. No big deal.

fyi I called C Bros and their tech support said the quattro cleats are made with a harder brass and won't wear as fast. $25 instead of $20 for the std replacements.

I have about 5000 on my CB cleats. Probably should be replaced.
