Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

TruVativ GigaPipe Bottom Brackets

A new bike for me is months and months away, but it's never too early to fantasize, right?

I haven't found a ton of reviews on TruVativ BBs and Cranks, but the ones I've found have been favorable. If I were buying today I'd definitely go with a TruVativ Elita crank, SRAM cassette, SRAM chain, and 105 shifters/derailleurs. I'm undecided on the BB, though.

I currently have a 105 BB and I've noticed that it's started making a little noise lately (somewhere between 3,000-4,000 miles on it). I've read of similar issues on road****************.

Finally, the question: How does a TruVativ GigaPipe compare to an Ultegra BB? With Ultegra 9 speed going out of style they're about the same price. Is it better to match the TruVativ crank with a TruVativ BB, or would it really matter? They're both compatible, but I'm wondering if it's like the SRAM cassettes where you can use a Shimano chain but the SRAM chain works much better. I'd definitely try a GigaPipe over a 105 BB, but I have no experience with the Ultegra.

BTW, I love that the Ultegra 9 speed is going out of style. I'm fine with 105, but I've found some Ultegra 9 spd cassettes and RDs at prices nearly identical to 105. If I could only find the shifters as cheap that would be cool, but I haven't had much luck with that yet.

Is 105 going 10 speed in the near future? I'd love for 105 9 spd to go out of style and drop in price like the Ultegra 9 spd.

105 10-speed has been confirmed for a while; just do a forum search.

Truvativ's cranks will all be going external bearing for 2006, including the Elita, so you might want to hold out for a bit. It's the same principle as FSA's MegaEXO and Shimano's outboard BB's. Their website already reflects the changes.

If you're interested in compact gearing, Shimano will also be releasing a compact crank soon, labelled FC-R700. There will only be one model; no Ultegra or DA desgination/separation (however, it uses those sexy DA buzz-saw rings). It incorporates the integrated crankarm/spindle and outboard bearing BB. They say it is designed to work with their existing front derailleurs, so there's no need to get a compact specific FD. Link to some info is HERE

From what I understand, Shimano will be releasing an Ultegra-level compact crankset for 2006 and a Dura-Ace counterpart the following year. I expect we'll learn more once Interbike rolls around in about 2 weeks.
