Hello all,
I am wondering if a bike that I am looking @ buying is worth the asking price. The bike is a 2001 Trek 2200 Alpha SL (hope i wrote that right) that some guy sold to the LBS. Rolf Wheels (not Rolf Prima), carbon fork, good tires w/little wear, Shimano 105 group front and rear. A nice ergo seat, 2 bottle holders and CF seatpost are part of the deal as well.
The LBS is asking $650. They sell the Specialized Allez (whatever model the lowest end ones are) for $700, and they come w/Sora group parts (not my fave) and not much else. How's that for a price...should i knock it down a bit or stay my hand?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Nice looking bike! Can't comment on the pricing though. If you get it you've got to lower those brakes on the bars. Can they even be reached from the drops?

it's not a bad deal. not the best deal on the planet, but it's not a rip off either. as long as everything is in working order it should be a fine bike.

Haven't even sat on the bike...i was on my way out of the LBS and I noticed it. I was running late and didn't have time to really feel out the bike. I did ride an Allez earlier in the day and it felt...different than what i'm used to (an early 80s Nishiki Olympic 12 monster). I guess it could be the weight (~27lb vs around 18 or so) but still the Allez didn't feel like a "great" bike should.

Try to find out who's selling it. Is it an employee's bike? Is it on consignment? Or does your shop take trade-ins? it looks like a decent deal ( clipless pedals, cages, etc) Offer them $550 and ask them to give it a good tune up.

Maybe it's the picture but don't those look like a women's set of bars?

I went back to the shop today and looked @ the wheels. All they say is Rolf Vector...no pro, no comp. I was mistaken on my previous post about the bike's asking price. The seller was asking $675, not 650. The same guy who is selling the Trek on consignment is also selling a nice Bianchi Talladega with a full Ultegra group that I'm going to check up on after work...i would suspect that the bianchi would be going for more though. It's a nicer bike w/better components. Still quite worth checking up on.

that bianchi got bought up quick. Must've been the Ultegra group on it. The bianchi talladega was going for the same price as the trek...possible bacause it was a yr older. Whatever, the trek's in much better shape. It'll be mine in a week or two.
Honestly though, Ultegra vs 105: is there much difference?

that Alpha SL is a good frame...fairly light and not too harsh. I found the Cannondale frames much harsher than these SL frames by Trek.
I like the colors.
Take it for a test ride and make sure it is all in working order...and that it fits you.
Wheels are pretty good. Dependable components with the 105 stuff.
Not bad for around 650.
