Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd say it's the Forest of Arenberg, during the Paris-Roubaix race. The road is normally closed to traffic throughout the year, but they open it up just for the race. I think this is also the site where Johan Museeuw crashed and broke his knee cap. It later became infected and almost became a career-ending injury. Any way, this section of cobbles is particularly challenging, and and the contenders use it as an opportunity to hurt the pretenders. I'll also take a guess that the rider is George Hincapie.

Not sure what you're getting at with the question, and I suppose others might have gotten it right already, but here goes.

The cobblestone section through the Arenburg Forest in the Ardenne region of France. This cobblestone section was in such bad condition that it was excluded from the 2005 Paris-Roubaix race, and is allegedly being reconstructed so that it can be put back in the race. It is generally one of the places in the race where riders who are not up near the front are in danger of being caught in a fall, or being blocked off and losing enough time to drop out of contention in the race.

Historically, the Ardennes region is where the Battle of the Bulge was fought in December 1944 - January 1945. It is where Hitler's last-gasp offensive incursion was thwarted by a staunch and resourceful contingent of mostly American soldiers held off a hugely superior force of German armor at Bastogne, thereby denying them access to the roads that would have been necessary for them to continue to pursue their offensive. This delay also kept the German armor from reaching petrol depots which literally caused their panzer divisions to run out of gas.

Am I warm?
