Problems with cars - negligence or maliciousness?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Problems with cars - negligence or maliciousness?

Are the drivers in your area actively malicious towards road cyclists, or merely negligent and careless?

Walrus, in general, I find Vancouver and the vacinity really mellow. Sure, today must have been national no turn signal day, but I don't think I've ever experienced anything malicious around here so far, but I don't have to commute into the west end.

Negligent and careless, today, I was traveling on the backroads of my town, and these two guys were driving tractors on the opposite lane of me, then this old guy in a truck comes onto my side of the road and passes them, I was in clear sight too, yet he couldnt wait a few more seconds for me and my dad to go by...

Yah, the average motorist around here is very aware of his/her surroundings, traffic flow, stop lights, etc. They are distinctly less aware of cyclists...perhaps they think they're just large insects with circular wings that fly close to the ground and are too dimwitted to get out of the way. I also drive on the same roads, and get treated far better in my car. Sometimes I swat one of those pesky insects, just to 'fit in'....

No. Not really.

The scurge of cyclist is the driver w/ a cell phone stuck to his ear.. It seems that most of the close calls I have had, 90% of them are people on cell phones and not paying attention to there driving..

Do you think it is reasonable for a person to take a special drivers test while talking on the cell phone and if they pass are given a special license plate that says multi-tasking capable driver.. If they cannot pass they are given a standard license plate and if they are caught talking on the phone while driving, automatic ticket.. This of course is just a dream world that I think should exist..
