Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

On your left

Look, when you are as slow as I am, you hear "On your left" an awful lot.

And sometimes on flats, especially the bike trails, I actually say it myself a couple of times.

But in a world where style matters, where people pay hundreds for a seat they sweat on, where design makes a difference, why do we greet so many of our fellow cyclists with such a proletariat greeting?

Can it not be “sulla sua sinistra” ("on your left" in Italian)? Or another simple call that lends more of a deserved air of sophistication?

I look to you, my internet friends, to come up with an idea.

Thanks.

I always yell, "Omigod he's got a gun!" and people dive off the path. Just kidding. I don't bother talking, I just ring my bell and hope for the best.

"please, kind sir, would you be so inclined to allow me safe passage on your leftmost side?"

that's what i normally say, if i'm not in a hurry.

"Either pull for me, or get the hell out of my way."

I actually came up on a guy yesterday, yelled "on your left" and he swerved directly infront of me. Next time I'll say I'm comming up on his right.

don't say anything. You might scare the bejeezus out of them if they're in their own little world.

Just give slower riders room.

I've had riders tell me why I should have told them I was coming up, along with how to go about having intercourse with myself, more than a few times when I tested the silent approach.

I think I might have to use the language appropriate to the jersey I'm wearing: "Sua sinistre" for my Mercatone Uno jersey; "A tu izquerda" for my ONCE jersey; "Na leva" if I ever get that CCCP jersey that's caused so much controversy in another thread.

Being from England, people would look at me with odd glares if I yelled 'on your left' as I would be attempting to squeeze between their good selves and the pavement/sidewalk/whatever you guys call it. Probably ending in mutual tears.

Therefore I prefer 'on your right' or something equally as original and witty.

What do you say when passing a paceline?

Do you say "On your left. On your left. On your left. On your left. On your left. On your left. ..."?
