Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

front shifter brake STI question

I always thought that a brifter (shifter brake lever, sti) was either double or triple compatible, not both (talking about the left one, front shifter), but this guy that has a set says it'll work with both... which doesn't make sense, i think he's missunderstanding the shimano booklet that came with the shifters, IE, they're AVAILABLE in double and triple, but i don't think he know's exactly which he has

can anyone back me up on this? or is there some switch or gear inside that you just have to pop??

If it clicks twice (3 positions) then it's a double. If it clicks three times (4 positions) then it a triple. This is true for DA and Ultegra and (I assume) 105. Tiagra I don't know.

A triple will work fine on a double if you adjust the tension so that the shifter only indexes twice.

Now Sora only has 2 indexes on it's triple. Cheaper stuff = less versatility.

hmm... odd, cause nowi remember my ultegra shifter have 4 postions, and it's a double, there's a big ring, and a second big ring that's pushed further over to the right if i want to use 13 or 12 cogs on my 12-25 cassett without any noise from the front derailleur. There's also the same thing on the small ring, there's small ring, and small ring with the derailleur slightly over to the right so it can allow the chain to cross a little bit to 16 and 14 on the cassette. And it's 4 different clicks on the shifter, not just smudged between shiftings.. lol damn now i'm more confused..

btw, the brifter's in question the guy is selling are this year's 105's the ST-5510

Many people, including myself, use the 4 position shifter with a double. 105 is set up the same way.

If you like the deal, go for it. They'll work just fine.
