Reason to say "Pass on Left" when passing

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yesterday, I was on a bike trail...Someone passed me on a narrow path..Did not hear them as they passed. So I spit at them, by the sound of it, must have hit their leg or somewhere in that proximity..
Got cussed at.. They were only reasonably pizzed.
Glad not too mad. Don't think I feel too guilty about it..How can someone wizz by at 20 mph and not be heard..One reason for a noisy chain, I guess. I always say passing on left. anything less is unfriendly.

Next time I'm on the road, I'm going to yell "spit on left!" just in case.

Yeah, but you spit in reaction to the guy passing you.

You must be quite a prodigious spitter to have hit someone passing you at 20 mph that you didn't even hear coming!

Ever thinking becoming a pro spitter?

Is it possible that the person who passed you had called on your left and you didn't hear him? I know that sometimes (not often) I yell "on your left" but people act surprised when I go by. Typically, these people are talking to a friend or wearing headphones, but once in a while I go by a single person without headphones who seems startled. Maybe I don't yell loud enough ... maybe they can't hear well.

Even though it is frustrating to be startled on a trail or road, spitting on someone in retaliation is not the correct response. You're probably fortunate that you didn't spit on someone who has a similar approach to problem solving....

Maybe he meant that he just happened to spit as they passed by. I had this happen to me just the other day. Luckily it didn't hit me and the kid was very apologetic.

Every time I have given some type of warning, by the time I was close enough for them to hear me it has just scared the crap out of them and they move into my line or get pissed.

Exactly. Maybe you didn't hear him. One time I had a guy give me a lecture about bike etiquette when we stopped at a stop sign because he didn't hear me say "on your left" three times. He didn't hear me because he was listening to music on his headphones.

Next time my wife blows by me I'm going to spit on her leg.....in which case I'll get a face full of Cytomax so I'll have to smack her on the behind with my zefal for which she'll retaliate by smearing my jersey with powergel and wearing her one piece zip up flannel body suit pajamas to bed tonight.

If some roadies are arrogant jerks (and no "if" about it), some of you mountain bikers are crazed dudes.

"Did not hear them as they passed. So I spit at them..." sounds diliberate to me.

Poor hearing? Buy a mirror.

Perhaps some councilling is in order? Or just very poor up bringing? Undoubtably very poor judgement and social skills. I'm not an advocate of violence, but you certainly shouldn't be surprized when you're behavior brings on a pretty ugly and violent reaction that buys you a trip to the ER.

The only word that seems to sum it all up is "pathetic".

Anyone that spits on me on purpose is in for an a** kicking, or at least, a fight. No kidding.

That is just about the most offensive thing you can do to a fellow cyclist (or anyone else). I'm glad you live on the opposite coast.

Good riding,

Spitting at someone who cruised past you without incident is enormously disgusting. Speaking of disgusting... I 'wish' I could launch snot rockets...Mostly I wheeze out a mucus/mucous (select your preferred spelling) balloon that variably lodges on my jersey or shorts. I know my pace can be snail-like, but man...I look like I'm hosting snails on my person.

Did you spit to the left and not here them or did you spit because they did not say "on your left"?
The first would be understandable and the second would not be playing nice with others.

Dood, you could use some anger management. If the guy didn't hit you, what's the problem?

Giving cyclezealot the benefit of the doubt (though the post was confusingly worded), I read this to mean that he was in the act of innocently spitting, and would have held off if he had heard the guy coming up behind.

In other words, it was an accident. Right, cyclezealot**********?

Geez you people are hard asses. The guy said he didn't hear him coming! ie. he didn't know he was there. And further he says he wasn't even sure he hit him and that the guy cussing led him to believe he did. ie. he wasn't looking when he spit or he would have seen him get hit. I notice that many people post to this forum and everyone is so quick to assume the worst and just ream the OP. C'mon RELAX!
