Does Trek really get $5,000 for a Dura Ace equipped bike?
https://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2004/road/madone59.jsp
Granted it's a really nice bike but is it $5,000 nice?

I don't really like the trek look. Some would say that trek doesn't really design bikes very well, but I have seen some nice color schemes come out from them. I simply don't like their brand, so I wouldn't personally pay 5k+ for a trek bike. But I'd imagine that I would possibly be willing to shell out about that much for a similar bike with similar components.

For that kind of money I would expect a custom bike with at least Record components. $5,000 still buys a lot of bike. Like I said the Trek is a really nice bike, but is really $5,000 nice?

That being said I wouldn't pay 5k for a bike currently regardless of who made it because my $1900 bike still is plenty for me.

I disagree, but not to start an argument, only to give another point of view (mine).
I'm not keen on all the outsourcing american companies are doing so I'd rather spend my money on a bike company headquartered in America that is creating jobs here rather than overseas.
I like high-end Treks because they look distinctively american, they are certainly race proven, and I have one!
If you lived overseas where all the thousands of bikes look the same, a Trek actually stands out amongst them. Then you might wish you had a Trek.

As an example, I saw the Specialized Roubaix Pro 05 with full DuraAce and monocoque carbon on sale for $3200. Not the same bike -- but is the Madone 5.9 worth an additional $1800? To each his own.

It's the frame that's the selling point. If you imagine the frame is ~$3000 and the group is around $2000 then it doesn't seem that absurd. You could easily go to wrench science and find several $3000 frames. It doesn't seem that odd too me. Generally, the highest end products of anything usually cost proportionally a lot higher

The advert for the Lance Armstrong Limited Edition Madone ( 500 bikes at $7000 each) has been up for quite a while. Time to offer the remainder at blow-out prices, I'd say.

Who was it on the TdF telecast that told the story about telling off the stupid kid in the bike store that made a similar comment?

Where I ride, all I see are Treks. I'm one of these guys who likes being a little different. Dont know anything about the quality other than that Madone is supposed to be hot stuff, but I still like standing out.. Besides if I had $5,000 to spend on a bike, I'd buy a $3,000 bike and use the rest on something else I dont need..besides, I'm a clydesdale. I wouldnt be able to tell the difference, but I bet I'd beat the crap outta those pretty rims..

If your asking about pure value, then probably no bicycle is worth over $1500. It's a bicycle after all, something that was perfected by the 80s.
If you do have the money though, and won't think twice about spending upwards of $4000, then every dollar of a top brand, top components is worth it for so many reasons, many of which you don't really want to admit
Often it is just perspective. I don't think a Ferrari at $150K is overpriced, or even a McLaren roadcar at $1M. I do think a factory Benz that came off a production line ridiculously expensive at $80 or $125K.

I doubt there's any $5K bike that you couldn't get for less than $4K if you time your purchase. I've seen Scott CR1's for $3.6K; got my Agilis for under $3.5K. Once you realize that, it'd be damn hard to pay $5K for anything short of custom.
