Is there a decent trainer for <$150.00?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those Cyclops ones are nice ,but they are kind of pricey. Any competetitor make something that's quiet and reliable (doesn't have to be liquid)?

Excel has this one on close out. I've had mine for four years and it works great. It has a magnetic resistance unit though. It doesn't get much use now because I prefer rollers.

I don't mean to hijack this post, but can anybody please lay out the big variables when sit comes to trainers? I'll probably be looking for something to use this winter, and would be willing to spend $150 to $200 or so. My bike is an '04 Spec. Allez Comp Double.

I just ordered this one from Performance. 20% off with the coupon code downstairs. It came highly recommended from a guy at RBR.

I guess fluid is better than magnetic, based on the prices?

Fluid is way nicer than magnetic. And yes, Performance sells some very nice trainers, good 'n cheap. Take a look at their Century Fluid trainer. Smooth, quiet, and uber-easy to set up.

I have two trainers - one magnetic and one fluid. Fluid trainers provide a greater bandwidth of resistance. Magnetic trainers with remote adjusters can overcome this. My magnetic trainer doesn't have a remote adjuster. When my wife uses the magnetic trainer, she sets it on the lowest setting to warm up. Then, when she's ready to push, she has to get off and click the resistance up a couple of notches or she won't have enough resistance. On the fluid trainer, the resistance is low enough when she warms up and increases quite dramatically when she gears up. No need for any manual adjustments on a fluid trainer, though some have that option.

When I use the magnetic trainer, I warm up in the highest setting because I'm too lazy to get off to increase the resistance once I'm warmed up.

Well, I just ordered the Century Fluid Plus. With the 20% off coupon, even w/ tax (I'm in MD) and shipping (the 99 cent shipping coupon didn't work, cuz of weight maybe?) it seems like a pretty sweet deal. Now I have a way to "ride" even if I get home late, and don't feel like braving the roads at night. I am still very much learning to ride, and my living room will make a great controlled environment, heheh.
