Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter Inside Training

I am looking at buying a set of rollers or a trainer. Which is better for inside winter training? What are the benefits of each?

Trainer provides resistance. There are different kinds of trainers, magnetic, and fluid. I heard fluid provides better power curve. Trainers are good for working on balance, pedal stroke, I also heard aerobic? I think there are resistance units you can attach to rollers. Not sure how they compare to the trainers.
Either way riding on a trainer or rollers is very very boring.

I can't offer a comparison of various types of equipment, but I love my fluid trainer.

^^ Hey, sometimes the only way to get good hard miles in is on a trainer INSIDE.

They aren't boring if you find a way to make it not boring. Heh. I play music. Loud. I watch cycling on TV while playing music. I ride with someone else and talk to them and challenge each other.

That said, there is something said for improving bike control by going out into snow and riding around trying not to fall. Road slicks don't do great at this - I recommend a fixed gear with a knobby on the front and probably rear too.

I set up the trainer in front of my computer and watch DVDs.

I've put thousands of miles on watching quite a few movies and the first six seasons of the X-Files (so far) without getting bored.
