Average Speed is relative, but traffic is driving me nuts.
So late this afternoon I head out for a quick ride on my basic 1 hr, 16 mile loop. I ride this loop a lot, so I kind of use it as an indicator of my improvement. Earlier this year I was in the 14+ average range (from the house and back). Usually I’m somewhere in the 15’s anymore. My best until tonight was a 16.8 avg mph. So tonight I’m pushing, we are going out to eat and I need to be home, plus I felt good, so why not. I do a decent first half, not super fast, but good. On the second half I really start getting into form. Charging up hills, hitting the drops for descents, etc… With less then ½ mile to go, I’m up to a 17.3 avg mph. Then I need to cross one major road and get to the house. Well, I cranked as hard as I could between stops, but my avg still dropped to 16.9 mph over 16 miles. A personal best on my course, but man I wanted 17 so bad at the end, and just could make it happen. It’s in reach, so next time I’ll push harder on the front half, but if it wasn’t for all those stop lights, cars, and stop signs, I’d have a new personal best tonight. Just rambling on…
