So, I was having a beautiful ride today...caught up with two gorgeous blonde triathlete girls and rode with them for about 5 miles and then bam...pedal pedal pedal...chain skip...pedal pedal pedal...chain skip...damnit!! Couldn't keep pace cause the damn chain kept throwing me off my cadence. I had to tell the girls great ride and head back to the bike shop since I had no idea what was going on. I had just been to the shop right before the ride and was gloating over how well the mechanic there had put the bike together and how I hadn't had any problems yet. Of course, I finally have the ability to stay with some tri girls and I have to get off my bike...grrr...next time, next time

It's called Murphy's Law . . . . . . whenever something can go wrong, it will . . . . .
and usually at the worst possible time.
and usually at the worst possible time.

You mention some admiration in how well the mechanic put the bike together. Makes me want to ask, "Is this a new bike?" If it is, you're probably having the same issues I'm having with mine, which is breaking it in; my shifting was jumping around due to cables stretching out. You know, gremlins in the STIs and such.

yeah the mechanic did an excellent job on the bike...i've had it since September 1st and put a little over 450 miles on it. turned out that I had a stiff link in my chain. He fixed it in less than a minute. No gremlins in the STIs I got campy centaur...the shifting is excellent

As to the titular question, though: I've found it's not that things go wrong when you don't want them to; things go wrong all the time, it's just that you notice it more when it's the last thing you want.
At least you have hot tri girls to ride with. I'm happy with the camels I get to see once in a while. Yes, camels; dromedaries to be exact.
