Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rudy Project lenses prone to scratches?

I bought a pair of Rudy Project Rydons a few months ago. In addition to the "smoke" lenses they came with, I also bought a pair of clear lenses for night riding. I swap the dark and clear lenses fairly often, maybe once a day. I notice that both pairs of lenses have scratch marks already even though they are supposedly scratch resistant. I handle them quite carefully and do not drop them, etc.

I am happy with the Rydons otherwise and especially like their adjustability. However, it is disappointing to see that the lenses do not hold up very well. I do know about their lens replacement program, but certainly do not want to shell out 12 bucks or so every couple of months!

Anyone with similar experiences with RP?

I don't ownRudys...Oakleys...but, in the case of Oakley they come with a bag that is the only thing you are supposed to use to wipe off the lenses. That prevents scratches and also protects the coating they use...I even use it on the clear lens I have to keep it from scratching.
If you use paper towels, things like that, no good...

Could that be the issue?

There are special types of fabric to use on plastic lenses. Check into an optics store and get one. This should help.

I have several Rudys, none with scratches after many rides. Are you using the microfiber bag supplied with your frames?

Rudy Project has a lens warranty. For $14.95 they will replace a scratched or defective lens. Google Rudy Project lens warranty for complete info.

I have the RB3 and two lenses, with some very minor scratches. I use the microfiber bag to keep them in, and another microfiber cloth to clean them. I find that using circular motion while cleaning helps to prevent the sun from forming rays when looking from shadows into light.

I have been using the bag to clean them for the most part. I also use a microfiber cleaning cloth on occasion since it is handier. But no paper towels and the like (I am paranoid in this regard!)
