Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

where to buy a new 126 wheel?

I am looking for a replacement wheel for my friend's trek road bike. It has 126 spacing, and is 700c 7 speeds. The rear wheel was stolen. Does anyone know a good place to get a replacement? The LBSes are just so expensive.

Non profit out of seattle with tons of old bike gear. Don't know if they will ship but they are super cool and helpful. Call or email them.

Hey adampaiva. Nice of you to shop for your friend. There's a "New Old Stock" Shimano 7-speed hub on ebay going for $9.99 that your friend could build up:

Good luck! - RJ

Or, buy the $9.99 hub and any 130mm road wheel.
1. Transfer the freehub body and axle set from the 126mm hub into the new wheel.
2. Transfer the 130mm stuff onto the hub - PRESTO you now have a 130mm 8/9/10 speed hub.
3. List the rebuilt hub on Ebay and try to get more than $9.99 for it.

Retro Grouch- would he have to buy a 36-spoke 130mm road wheel, since the ebay hub is 36-hole?

I would say you are better off to buy a 126 mm rear hub on ebay and lace it to any rim you like. For 126 mm spacing it was probably a thread on freewheel and the good news is you can get a pretty good 7 speed freewheel at NAshbar for about $20. The last 126 hub I bought I got for $10. If you have the hub and the freewheel on the way just go the the LBS, pick ut a rim and have them build a wheel for you, unless you like building wheels, which I do (a sickness) ............
