Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another one bites the dust.

So im on my 30mile commute home/training ride and i decide to take a detour. I make a turn and then another and i wind up facing a huge hill. Not too long, but really steep. I hate hills but I will not avoid them- so I kept going. Shiffted to my granny gear and started grinding it out. The ground was wet and my incredible crappy tires (oem bontrager select from like 03, dont ask) were performing as expected. I was about halfway up and i felt something give and instantly I was going down.

My left foot came unclipped and went inbetween the downtube and the toptube and got stabbed by my chainring in about 8 spots. Handlebars, hand, left shoe and carradice saddle bag all hit the ground. Everything survived without a scratch except for the bar tap (just installed yesterday, don't you love that!).

I pick the bike up, trying to figure out what the hell happened when i see my chain laying on the ground. So now im pissed, bleeding, and about 7miles from home when i see another roadie pass me. He doesn't say a word... So im leaning my bike against a pole, hoping my mini chain tool is in my bag and i find it. A little link removal and reatchment and im good. Roadside repair on a wet road with look cleats is not fun. I was slidding all over the place. Im putting everything back when another roadie comes up the hill...

...its the same guy. He says, "how's it going." I reply, "broke my chain." To which he says, "yeah, i saw that earlier." I laughed to myself and rode home. I haven't fallen in a long time, guess i was due.
And before anyone says anything about this thread being worthless without pics...

You might want to ask that guy what zone he trains in. To have an absolute disregard for anyone else while you're riding, that's some singleminded focus!

Anyway, that looks really funky. Just finish the pattern the rest of the way around your leg and tell people you're thinking about getting some tatoo work done but didn't want to completely commit that much money without seeing how it looked first.

Glad to see you're up and around. You've taken it alot better than I would have.

Guy was not much help...

What kind of chain was it and did it break at the connector or at a random link?

Hill intervals...? I can attest to being in a zone for some of those... but I would come back and help when the interval is done.

For you: Time heals all wounds.
And Mr. Zone-face: Time wounds all heels.

As for the incident itself, handle it deftly and you won't want anyone to stop to help.

Had a friend whose mountain bike chainring stabbed him and got infection so bad some minor surgery was required because he didn't clean wounds well enough. Chain grease is nasty stuff when it gets in the body.

Yeah, I bet if you had shaved you prolly would have reduced enough drag not to shift into the granny gear, thus escaping the entire episode ....

Hope you heal well.

Ouch, man. Get those bite marks checked out and ask for some Tylenol-3 while you're at it... looks painful.

This story makes me think I should start carrying a chain tool on those 80 mile rides. Yikes!

Hey, let's look at this: Do you expect him to stop and hold Inky's hand? If he saw a broken chain and didn't have a chain tool what good would it have done to stop? Since he obviously was doing loops he knew that if Inky needed some other kind of help he'd be there next curcuit.

This is the sort of problem that I've talked about with roadies. If someone has a problem and I can't do anything about it what the hell good is it going to do anyone to stop and commiserate? All it could do would be to interfere with Inky making appropriate plans.

And let me say that I'm the FIRST one to stop and offer assistance of any kind to anyone, but I don't get blown away when no one else does the same.

In fact just a couple of months ago I came across someone walking their bike while I was driving by. I always carry spare tubes and stuff just in case and I stopped to offer assistance. I almost had to break the guy's arm to get him to accept a made-in-PRC $2 innertube to fix his flat. Then he presents me with the $8 high end tube (unrepairable of course) as if it was a real present. People really ARE funny.

The moral of all this is that you are your own man and if you screw up on the road consider it your own position to fix. If someone else happens by and wants to help appreciate it. He didn't have to stop.

Why do I get the idea that Inky had a Shimano chain that he "fixed" before without the proper Shimano link pin?

I do it all the time and I know that SOMEDAY..........

Which is why laughed to myself when he passed by the second time. I don't sweat it when people don't offer help, i just find different peoples behaviour interesting.

Thats why I always have tubes, CO2 cartridges, chain tool, and allen key set with me when i ride.

SRAM 9sp chain for use with my SRAM 9sp cassette. Park CT-6 folding chain tool. Chain broke at a random link. I just removed it.

Had the wife clean up the leg. If I race next season, then i'll shave 'em.

Man, that sucks. The weather out here has been kind of nasty lately, hasn't it? Hopefully it will be a little sunnier this weekend. What hill was this?

Nope, just ask and be prepared to offer assistance the first time around. How many downed cyclists do you see in a day?

Look at it as an opportunity to do something good rather than an impostion on your training time. Perhaps if he was unable to help on that first circuit, he could have helped find someone who could.

It has less to do with being a cyclist and more about being a human.

I agree with patrick07...just ask the first time, if you can't help with the chain, just make sure he's feeling ok...wheres the love?

you'll get use to the hills.
