Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cold weather question

This is my first season riding in the winter. I live in North Carolina it doesn't get too bad here. The lowest for the season should be 20. But most avg days it's like high 48 lows 35. Well my question is this. I was in my LBS today and looking at winter wear. And they have 2 choices. 1. Go with a light jacket and leg and arm warmers. 2. A ligh jacket and they have long winter cover pants that are light weight. That go over your riding shorts. The big question has anyone tried both. And what is the feelings toward both. I can get them for about the same price. But I don't see a need in buying them all if the temps are not that cold. Just any advice on this would be great. I know there is a search forum lol. But I want to hear from people that has tried them both and how they feel. Thank you for listening and the help Stay safe and good riding!!!

I use both leg warmers and tights. Leg warmers aren't all that warm - good for a cool summer day. Tights are warmer - fall/spring. Both together are pretty good - late fall/early spring. And then if you combine them with sweats overtop, that's even better - winter.

For the days in the 40's I would say arm and leg warmer are all you need. when it starts to go lower do just the jacket + leg warmer I find that I warm up a lot on my rides you will want to feel a little chilled at the beginning or you may over heat before the end.
