Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BS from an LBS?

I've been looking for an 8 speed 13-23 or 13-21 cassette to put on my Sora equipped bike. When I go into a bike shop and ask about it, they pull out their big fat book or look on their computer and tell me, to paraphrase U2, that what I'm looking for can't be found.

Then I google "13-23 8 speed" and find this:

https://www.bikepro.com/ad_copy/free_cass.html

Who is for real and who is giving me BS? Is there or isn't there such a thing as an 8 speed 13-23 or 13-21 cassette?

Shimano use to offer those cassettes. They are not listed in the current QBP catalogue(current offering is a 13x26) and that is one major parts source. Does not mean they are not still available if you check the right place.

Tell that bike shop they need to subscribe to Bike'alog. It shows over 15 suppliers carrying over 25 models of a 13-23t 8-speed cassette...

A little off topic but I mentioned that I was planning on buying a Cervelo Soloist to one of the managers of the biggest bike shop in my area and he tried to tell me that Cervelo frames were made by Giant (of course this is right after he told me that they don't carry cervelo and right before he pointed out the lovely Giant that was sitting on the rack)

They're around though less frequently these days. I just picked up a 12 x 23 a couple of weeks ago. Look online and call around to different shops.

Try here too:

Couldn't you use a 9 speed cassette? If I recall correctly the Sora shifters are fine up to 9 speeds, and there is a spacer on the largest slot in the Sora cassette.

Not exactly. 8, 9, and 10 speed cassettes are the same width, just with narrower teeth and spacing as you put more cogs on it. 7 speed cassettes are narrower in total width and require a spacer to use on a 8/9/10 speed freehub. Sora brifters will only shift an 8 speed.
