How to measure size for frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to measure size for frame?

Hey all,

I'm pretty new to road cycling. I'm still deciding on my sub 700 dollar road bike and doing some research on the forums, and I have a question before I choose. What size is best for someone that is 5'5.5" (heh). Or how do I figure out what the best size is for me? Also I'm probably still going to be growing a bit.. but probably not much left growing to do.

(I have my eye on the Giant OCR 3, but possibly the Jamis Satellite because it's steel... I just have to decide what's better for me.)

Thanks in advance,
William Lam

I found this company's calculator to be pretty good, but online calculators are just a start, always best to try the bike in person before buying.

Probably 52cm. 54 cm would fit, but that would be pushing it. 53 would probably work.

I ride a 54 and am 5' 6", but this leaves me little standover clearance. Also, it has me a bit streched out.

You HAVE to try it in person, IMO, because people vary in proportion.

there's no way to tell with that information, and frame size(= seat tube length) is mostly irrelevant. the seat tube angle and top tube length are the relevant measurements.

Or how do I figure out what the best size is for me?
by going to a good fitter.

I suggest that you do the competitive cyclist website fit calculator. Be scientific with multiple measurements of each and average. You absolutely need a partner to measure you for this.

https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...LCULATOR_INTRO

It will give you 3 fits. I used the smallest one and it works great for me. I compared the spec sheet it outputed to the bike I was interested in.

I weighed the suggested TT the heaviest. In my opinion, top tube is the most important since it spaces the steering axis from the seat post.

Alright, thanks for all the help guys. When I get my bike I'll get the people at the bike store to fit me.

Cheers,

Be careful! The competative cyclist fitting calculator takes nearly an hour if you do it yourself. If the store isn't going to take that long then you should do it yourself.

I'm the same height as you are and I ride a 50cm frame which fits me absolutely perfectly. It definitely depends on the person.

you should consider seeing a fitter before you buy a bike, so you know what to look for. what seat tube angle are you going to ask the salesman for? what top tube length should your new bike have?

I'm not sure yet. I'm still deciding. My options are Giant OCR 3, Trek 1000, Lemond Etape. I'm going to go to the bike store and try riding them for a bit to see which one feels best. They're all around the same price, and have basically the same components.

EDIT: That I have available to me locally all around ~$600
