Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ksyrium elite wheels

Hello to all you roadies, keep gasping.
I've recently installed a ksyrium elite wheelset and feel like a sideplay particularly from the frontwheel, if i were to put more power at my handgrip i think i could touch the brakepads from side to side. How stiff are they really? Their hubs weren't supposed to go looser before they run 10000km the least.. Anybody more familiar with the wheels?

I had Elites before. They were super stiff and I never experienced what you described. I'm wondering if it is wheel flex or fork flex. How much do you weigh?

I'm not clear on what it is you're trying to describe but I will say this...my Ksyrium Elites have been awesome. I'm 230+ lbs and have logged almost 4,000 mi on them and only had to true them a couple of times. It seems the only times they get out of round are when you get a flat and don't stop immediately.

Yes, I know what you mean. I had the same thing with mine. The adjustable bearings just need the slightest of tightening.

Worry not, the wheels are amazingly stiff and responsive. They are supposed to come pre-adjusted from the factory but they sometimes are not done. Take it to the LBS though if you've never done this before, don't want to total your hubs!

the rim travels easily from side to side nearly touching the front brakepads. It's me pushing it, this doesn't happen in motion the alignment then is perfect!

Matt, are those closed cartridges really serviceable or have them replaced periodically? Do you believe the Elites are laterally rigid too?
Thanks for noticing

I love my Elites!!! I feel no flex in mine at all and I weigh 215 pounds. I like my brakes tight so there is very little room between my pads and the braking surface. I have never had them rub.

I'm 85 kg but i didn't quite use them yet.Noticed i could play the front rim nearly all the way from one brakepad to the other as early as after my first ride! Could it be a matter of simply tightening the bearings or is that impossible with closed cartridges?

take the wheels back with your bike to where ever you got them from and show them the problem, those wheels should be in pristine condition after one ride. I've ridding mine over pot holes and all kinds of crap and they have never been trued.

Elites are bulletproof!

170lbs, 2200 miles, 3 massive potholes and the wheels are perfect.

Have your wheels checked by the LBS.

5000ish miles. 175-185 lbs depending on the time of year. Trued 0 times. Stiffest wheel I've ever used. Something must be wrong with them.

Ditto, Elites are fantastic, being relatively light, strong and stiff, but not harsh like the SSC SL. The side to side is gotta be hub related or the spokes just arent tight.

These other comments are all well and good, but there is nothing wrong with your wheels if it's the same as my problem.

My wheels flexed so much that if I mashed so that the bike was swinging from side to side, my brake calipers would be knocked out of position and I would have to reset them after every ride. Carbon doesn't like being overtightened so I had no choice.

After the LBS adjusted my bearings, I have zero flex, and now I can run the pads just how I want them, around half a mm clearance from the rim. They stay true and are brilliant wheels with extremely rigid properties. I promise this will solve your problem and you will be a happy rider once more.

No probs for the info BTW
