Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's day and night from what you are riding (depending on the age of your 1200, it could be the SL aluminum frame or the Alpha). OK frame, been made since about 1997-98 in the same way from the same material. Trek's newer carbon frames are much nicer...lighter and tubing shaped for strength and stiffness...but if you are getting a good deal and the bike fits go for it.
You will want to buy nicer components than Tiagra for the 5000 frame, though.

Just make sure it fits. Did I say that you need to make sure it fits?

I will second or third that comment. It doesn't matter how nice the frame is if it is not the right size.
That being said Check out this website for an unbiased opinion.

Not everything on that site is accurate....the frame on the 5000 (back then it was the 5200 and 5500)was really only used for the first two Tours...after that they developed the OCLV110 (the 5900)...the year after that they did the Madone. Then a Madone without the seat tube fin...
But I understand what they are trying to say...but he did not ride the farme on the 5000 to five Tour wins.
Sorry.
But it's still a nice frame.

Eh? They sell the thing they are offering an opinion on!

An unbiased opinion would come from someone not making money out of the thing they are commenting on.
