Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sat. Ride Report: Autumn Splendor (with pix)

As things worked out, this was one of my favorite rides in a long time. The leaves are turning now, and despite a strong 25 mph wind, I had a blast out there today taking pictures to share with you.

Just after the turnaround (into the wind now) I stopped to talk to a guy on a 'bent' taking pictures, just to ask if he would like me to take one of him with the tree as background. It turned out real nice.

We had a nice conversation about the day and I moved on.
For some odd reason I had to pee during the ride today, which hardly ever happens to me. I pulled off at a nice little pond among the geese, dropped the bike and headed for some bushes. Then it was time to take in the scenery as long as I was there. I got a little artsy here....

Cool huh?
The air was crisp and clean and the sky pure blue. There were a lot of riders out today, traffic too. The city was alive with activity and the color of autumn. I ran into a HUGE track meet and stopped to watch some of that as well.

At some of the stops along the way I could hear the marching bands of a high school football game...at other places the whistles of the soccer referees. Yes, everyone was outside today.

I had a ball riding today taking all the sights and sounds in. And you know what? No sighting of The Knave today at all. Just as well. Things were too busy to mess around trying to drop him today. And when I got home, my afternoon and evening went to the reason I could not make the Cheesehead ride today in SE Wisconsin with my fellow BF'ers....and that would be us below....Mrs. Hip on her birthday today!

See that's the strange thing about cycling. It can be fueled by the anger of the hunt for The Knave...competition....pushing one's self. Or it can be fueled by the simple beauty of just man, bike, road, and the wonderful world around him.

Now...
Off to Mrs. Hip's birthday dinner at our fav Italian restaurant, where there will be much pizza, pasta and Italian margaritas!

Thanks for the pics Hip, a nice reminder of the simpler things that make cycling so great. And yes, the artsy shot through the wheel is pretty cool.

Looks purdy over that way, Hip. Thanks for the pix.

This is totally unrelated, but have you ever mentioned The Knave on your radio show?

What radio show?

And hip awesome pics if nothing else the knave is makeing you increase your skills with the camera as well

My imidiate area sucks for fall leaves. They have a tendancy to fall off before getting any vivid colors to them.Silver creak can be fairly decent for fall colors but other than that its fairly bland here. To windy :\

I finally finally finally got my Digi cam back from best buy land (rar!) So I can now take pics of some fall foliage. There is this really cool stretch of road where the trees bow down over the road to creat this tunnel of leaves, and when its orange its really beautifal. I may JUST MAY get a pic of it tomorrow...

I have NOT mentioned him on the show, but am thinking about doing an entire segment on him, including the BF aspect of it.

I HAVE mentioned BF before on the show though....when I had Chris Carmichael in studio for an interview. I asked him a few questions submitted by BF members....then I told him he looked a little heavy in person!
