So what happened?
One of my first posts back in April:
Email to a friend last week:
Have ridden 1200 mi so far since then. There is NOTHING wrong with my bike. Well, not exactly in love with the 105's, can be petulant.
So what happened? I thought I'd ride that Reno for quite a while. I am lusting after the Onix and can get it for a great price. Originally said I wasn't getting into the sport to race, just to get back in shape. Now after competing in a Tri last month I'm thinking I might like to try a couple races next season.
Somebody help!
I was in your same position about a month ago, looking at getting a first road bike. Did lots of research, talked to many biking friends and lurked here for a while reading the posts and gathering info. Went to 2 LBS one Fri and rode LOTS of bikes, all of which I had researched beforehand. Didn't want to go over $1k. Long story short, once I got on the Reno it was all over. I took everyone's advice to heart re: fit. That was going to be my first priority. This bike felt like it had been built for me. Bought it, added computer, clipless, seat bag, air pump, and went home. Snow finally gone here and have put 70 mi on it in 2 weeks. I LOVE this bike. Comfortable, responsive and most importantly makes me want to go out and ride.
50th BD coming up and instead of a party that is NOT coming together I suggested to my wife I get a new bike instead of all that $ for a big party. First reaction was; nothing wrong w/your bike now, (lemond Reno, full 105 triple, just upgraded to Mavic Equipe wheels) only 6 months old, yada yada yada. Anyway, ended by saying I could go for it as long as I sell my bike and SHE is not buying me a new bike. But now she is digging in her heels a bit which is really ironic. We have top of the line gear in everything we do (FFing, Tele ski, snowboard)
Looking at: Orbea Onix, Cannondale Synapse (new 06 comes in 105 for $2200 but then again not crazy about 105 now), Giant TCR 2 Composite, Trek 5200. Pros/Cons, any other suggestions?
I'm really enjopying this thing. Dropped almost 20# so far, do at least 2 group rides/week and riding ~ 70-100 mi per week. (3-4 x week)

Ooh, give into that lust. At least, as far as lusts and addictions go, cycling is one of the healthiest. Think of all those guys that snort coke up their nostrils. That can cost the price of a new bike in a week or two.
My wife really is good about what I buy, although my tastes are kind of expensive. But, if there's any resistence, I acknowledge the wisdom of her point of view and kind of pout around a bit, until she starts suggesting that I get what I want. Then, I pout about the place a couple of days, saying, "No, no, you're right," dropping a little, "It's just that I had my heart set on..." Usually, she ends up commanding me to get the thing just to shut me up and to stop the guilt tripping.
If all else fails, I entice her with something she wants to buy (she always buys it anyway, so why not).
We're both aware that this is a game, but, in our dysfunctionality, we're functional.
I think that you have to get a new bike!!! If you don't, it will eat away at you. Just make absolutely certain that this IS the one that you'll treat and respect like a best buddy for years and years.
GO FOR IT!!!

Sounds like some wives I know. Would rather spend the money throwing a big shindig for their husband even though he'd rather do something else.
What is it so many counselors preach - love me the way I want to be loved, not the way you think I should be loved. In other words, get to know me.
As far as the Onyx - sorry to divert up there - you are falling prey to OCP. I advise to just give in - but don't sell the Reno. A man can never have too many bikes.

Beatis-
I was were your at in July. I had my $500 Fuji birthday present for about nine months riding much more than anticipated and wanted a lighter Ultegra equipped bike. My wife started talking about getting Lasik for her eyes which would run us 2 grand. I thought about it for a week and told her one night, "why don't you get your Lasik and be done with it". She was like cool, and scheduled the operation. I asked her if she was happy and she said yes, to which I said good now I can spend my 2 grand when your eyes are done. She wondered why I needed more bike her thinking was I didn't really need it. I told her she really didn't need Lasik. To make a long story short the day after her eyes were done she called me at work and said go shopping but get what you want this time. I have since sold the Fuji to my brother in law for $275 and just purchased CycleOps resistance rollers for exactly that. From the tone of your post I can say 105 isn't getting it for you. The Orbea sounds like it will hold the OCP needs for some time so I say get it but get her something first of value. Trust me there's got to be something materially she wants that would balance an Orbea, find out what it is and your in.

Need to sell the Reno to minimize the cost of upgrade. And she doesn't keep score on the one-for-me/one-for-you thing.

May the force of OCP be with you.... Always.
Sorry, I would tell my wife flat out, "No party, new bike instead." But then, I hate parties to begin with.
I personally would go for a new Onix, or the 5200.

Ha - know the trajectory well. Started with a Trek 1500, loved it, and a year later ended with Merlin Agilis.
Don't rush in. Enjoy the OCP shopping experience. You're going to drop some coin, so make the LBS work it baby. Any good LBS will only be too glad to help you lighten your wallet and will be obsequious in doing so. Go for test rides on any nice bike you see. Explore the alternatives, like carbon vs Ti.
Also, hold onto the old bike. You'll need something for bad weather (can't take baby out in that), and you can put a rack on it for commuting or picnic rides.

So I bought him 3 disney princess dolls. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are blonde, and Ariel the Mermaid is a redhead.
I gave them to him telling him that he should be "careful with what you wish for"...
