Thanks - John
I'm not the guy you're asking, but I bought a used bike that had flight deck. I like it a lot. I know it's Freddish, but I like seeing the gears on the display.
Also, once you get the hang of which functions are where, it's easy to scroll between my favorites: elapsed time, speed, cadence and elapsed distance. There are other functions as well and equally easy to get to once you're familiar with the buttons. You can read of the functions in the on-line manuals that are available at shimano.com
Another nice thing: you can scroll through all the functions without taking your hands off the hoods - control buttons are in the hoods. I've had several other types of computers with similar functions including cadence, and they all required pressing tiny buttons on the display head - the hood buttons are much, much easier to use and I think safer.
One problem I had: I pinched one of the wires in the stem face plate when i changed the stem a couple of weeks ago. These are TINY wires. I tried to splice them, but couldn't make it work so I had to replace the wire/bracket kit. The head didn't need to be replaced.
My original Flight Deck had a wireless wheel/speed pickup. Those wiring/bracket kits are Beaucoup Bucks to replace. But I found wired bracket kits for very reasonable prices on line so I replaced wireless with wired. Actually the only difference between the "wired" and "wireless" bracket is the front fork sensor - in other words one thin wire running down from the headset to the fork. No big deal. The rest of the wireing/bracket is the same: Both types have wires running from the mounting bracket to each brifter where they connect to the internal Flight Deck workings of the brifter.
The computer head itself is a separate unit - and can be found VERY cheap on ebay stores and other NOS or discount places. This is 8/9 speed stuff. The 10 speed units are probably selling for full retail.
Digits are large and easy to read. Gear graphic display is easy to read and intuitive (FWIW).
Downside: you have to wake it from sleep and start it. No automatic starting like many/most other computers.
Bottom line: I like it more than I thought I would. I just bought a wired bracket kit and computer head for my daughter's Sora set up. Cost about $50 total including shipping from ebay sellers. I think she'll like the gear info because she's a newby. Regardless, the speedo, etc. is easier for a newby to use because of the convenience of the buttons.
