Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Knave is a spectre, a wraith... what Jung termed 'the shadow.' He exists deep within ourselves. He is what we see in the mirror when we put on our Assos bibs and two-hundred dollar vintage wool jerseys with matching socks and Sidi shoes. He is our inner dirtbag mountain biker that yearns to put on cut off jeans, a Megadeath t-shirt, and an old pair of Converse high-tops and head out on the trails hunting for roadies. He is the whirr of knobby tires passing us on the open road. He is the hill that tears our legs to ribbons. He is that fear deep inside that tells us we're never quite good enough, that we never look good enough, that someone else might set his or her Watt meter to 400 and leave us in the dust. He is the shadow. And we can never 'drop' him because he is us.

Or he might be Hip.

LOL. I've had this thought as well. I imagine some sort of 'fight club' scenario where hip realizes that he is in fact the KNAVE. I imagine a shot of hip, when it first strikes him, where the camera pulls back while zooming in, the whole time you see a look that is both bewildered but also scerene, as if he knew deep down inside all along.

I think somebody else also brought up this theory, but what if the KNAVE is really hips father!
The Knave: you were never told what happened to your father.
Hip: I was told enough. I was told that you dropped him.
The Knave: No. *I* am your father.
Hip: No, it can't be! That's impossible!
The Knave: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
Hip: NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Doppelganger?

Between the conception
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
(from "The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot)

"A Doppelgänger is a German expression literally meaning a "double walker". Often this term is used to describe a ghostly or shadowy self that is thought to accompany a person. Many times this entity is considered mischievous, tempting or luring its host onto the "dark" path. Seen in a broader sense, the Doppelgänger is just a reflection of our own base nature and makes a convenient rationalization for poor life-choices stemming from the inability to advance ourselves spiritually. Long a preoccupation with poets, composers, artists and filmmakers, the Doppelgänger is actually a real thing of ethereal substance that a person forms through spiritual neglect, i.e. by dragging the ideal of spirituality down to an earthly level instead of striving upwards to the great heights where human spirituality originates. The Doppelgänger attaches itself to our beings until we literally burn it off through a steadfast change in volition towards the spiritual.

The problem of the Doppelgänger really becomes significant, however, when an artist begins to surrender to the world of his shadow over the world of his spirit, the velvety allure of the Darkness as opposed to the austere, demanding Light. This is powerfully caught in the "Hymns to the Night" by Novalis, who wrote this poem after the death of his beloved and shortly before his own death at 29:"

Have you also
A human heart,
Dark night
What are you holding
Under your cloak,
That grabs so unseen, strongly
At my soul?

Let's hope it's just some 'Knave' on a bike, perhaps the simplest and comforting conclusion we can reach.
I had a fever lastnight due to a cold, and had a dream I met Hip.
Hip, did you dream last night of meeting some guy on a mountain bike?

.....No I swear I saw him today....Not once but twice. Both times coming at me in the opposite direction. I'm not imagining him....It can't be....When will his twisted tail and hunched sweatshirt back finally rid itself from my mind? Is it all leading up to a Halloween Day ride into eternity?

I'm starting to get scarred. Can I ever leave it all now, or is it too late for me? Will this haunt me until the end of time!

Actually, I think The Knave is a bike painter. How long has Hip been chasing this guy, about 15 months now? Leave him be, he has a job to finish.

About a month ago I was taking a Sunday ride on a local bike trail with my 9 year old son. We were stopped on the side of the trail and he was having a snack/drink. While we were there a rider came along and said "I've been chasing you for months and I've finally caught you!" Am I a KNAVE?

I personally think the Knave is Hips evil twin....

I mean they are total opposites Hip=OCP FC and Knave=anti-OCP.

Ok, that is one of the funniest things I have read in these forums. First, the humor is subtle. Second, you have to have been here and reading a lot to get it. That is one of the classic lines of all time. I may go to bed still laughing at that one. Great line. Thanks.

Thanks for noticing. Usually folks just give me a blank stare, followed by a shake of the head. Then I'll hear them, a few minutes later, regurgitating their soup. Nothing funnier than soup out the nose, I assure you.
