Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question about wheels...

Hi everyone, this is my first post on these forums and I've got a question reguarding the wheels of my recently acquired Marinoni. It's an early 90's bike with Dura-Ace 8-speed componentry and the rear wheel has 32 spokes, yet the front wheel has 36! I could see why they might have 36 in the rear for extra strength and 32 in the front, but this I've never heard of. Hubs and rims (Mavic) are apparently original too. Is there a reason for this?

Thanks.

In friendship,
Kyron

Hey Kyron, welcome to the forums ! Your observations are right- you would NORMALLY see a higher spoke count on the rear as opposed to the front. With an older bike like that it's very possible one of the wheels got swapped out, even though they look like original equipment. Unless there's a problem, I wouldn't worry about; just enjoy it and ride...ride...ride .

Cheers! - RJ

Probably not the original wheels for the bike.

Thanks guys, I took a closer look at the rims and actually did notice that the rear rim is a bit different from the front in color. Rather subtle, but it could be an indication that someone replaced something!
