Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Answer to the Challenge in Arizona. 325 miles with 22,000 ft. of climbing in three days; 2 centuries in a row and the third day is a double metric century.
Done it once on a tandem, stoker did not want to do it again. It was only 104 degrees at the finish line on day three.

10,700 feet over 100 miles:

Same territory as 6 Gap, in the spring there's BrasstownBald. Does Hogpen from 6 gap, but adds Brasstown. 12,000 vert, and 3 miles of 21% at the finish.

And I can't resist putting the link to my results (10th) https://www.brasstownbaldbustercentur...05_results.htm

The Assault on Mt. Michell.

Notice that all the climbing is at the END of the ride?

Brutal!

I did the Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge this year which has 10,000+ over 100 miles. It was not as bad as I thought it would be, but it was fairly stiff. Lots of long and steep stuff.

If you're in New England, check out the Mount Greylock Century, and the Great River Ride at about 10k each. Right in my neck of the woods!

Pick just about any 100 mile stretch of road in Colorado and make your own

Some examples: Durango to Silverton and back over 2 passes (Coalbank and Molas). If you want more continue onto Ouray over Red Mountain Pass.

Denver (Capital building) to Mount Evans. Start at 5280 ft, turn around at 14100+ft and end back in Denver with one 11,000 foot pass in the middle.

Team Evergreen Triple Bipass. 120 miles, 3 passes over 11,000 ft.

The old Colorado Springs Bike Club Hardscrabble Century. 25 miles of climbing, 75 miles of downhill...they just didn't tell you that the first 20 miles is uphill and the other 5 miles of uphill are at very inconvinient places.

I forgot to mention my own homebrew hill challenge, which may turn into a more organized ride next year: The Montebello 10K. 10,000' in 53 miles. If you don't count the downhill, as is the case with the Cycle To the Sun, it's 10,000' in 26.5 miles

How about, in California, the Death Ride -16,000 vertical in 129 miles. Also, there's the Sierra Century and the Burn of the Century, both tough 100 milers. www.bikeCal.com gives a list of rides.

Awesome part of this is that the route seems like it hits the same gaps as the schweet Appalachian Trail.
