Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm thinking about buying a Specialized Pro Road stem. Previously, I thought that adjustable stems were just for temporary use until you decide on the right specs and would then be swapped out for a fixed stem. But the Specialized stem is different in that the adjustable fittings are inside the steering column clamp and it may not have the problems typically found with adjustable stems (lack of stiffness and creaking). Plus, it looks like a fixed stem. They use it on many of their bikes, even some of the higher end models.

Having adjustability would be nice. Does anyone use one of these? How do you like it? Does it feel just as stiff and strong as a fixed stem?

I've got one on my Allez althogh I don't think it is the "pro road stem" model. It is basically a 2 way stem with an internal sleeve that makes it convert to a 4 angle stem. I've have not had any issues with lack of stiffness or any concerns whatsoever. I like mine.

Thanks. I think I'll give it a try.

There's one model that includes an extra angle shim, so you get 8 angles of adjustment.

I had one on my Allez and had no problems. I could be wrong but I don't think they would work with a fork with a carbon steerer tube though. The stem comes with a couple top caps that aren't completely round and fit the stem when mounted at different angles. These require the traditional star nut thing that gets inserted in a metal steerer tube to screw into. Carbon steerer tubes require a special top cap assembly and I don't think it would be compatible or at least it wouldn't line up with the hole in the stem properly. Just wanted to pass this along in case you have a full carbon fork.

My bike has an aluminum steerer tube, so hopefully it won't be a problem. Thanks for the heads up.

My Allez had that stem...worked like a champ. I would not think of it as a temporary stem. It will be just fine permanently

Yeah, this stem sounds ideal for my needs. I don't know why anyone would buy the other type of adjustable stem (the two-pieces connected by a joint), which is very mickey mouse. Specialized's patent no doubt precludes other brands from using this design.
