Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At 245#, I guess I can put some serious stress on my rear wheel. The Dura-Ace rear hub on my current set of Open Pros has started to crack on the drive side.

I did some shopping and decided to order a whole new wheelset, Ultegra/Open Pro CD (32 spoke 3x) from Performance ($229 minus the 20% coupon).

I checked with my LBS before ordering to see if they could come close, but just the rear wheel (Ultegra/OP/32/non-CD, built by Wheelsmith) was gonna run $175 plus tax. They said it wouldn't hurt their feelings at all if I got it on-line since there was such a big price difference.

What should I have my LBS do, if anything, to these wheels once I get them in? Check tension? Anything else? Should I ride them gently a mile or so before taking them in?

Have you considered building a 36 spoked wheel instead?

I bought a set of Ultegra Open Pros from SuperGo earlier this year when they had a 20% deal and these are the same wheels Performance sells. I weigh 220 lbs, so I'm no lightweight either, and I put them on my KHS Flite 800 - 853 Reynolds steel without having them checked out and they are running straight and true. The blurb on the wheels I bought from SuperGo stated their hand built, and my experience would suggest that's true. Good luck!

Hi,
I asked around a lot. A really good road rim for Clydesdales
is the Mavic CXP33. Btw, Performance tech help was one of the guys
that suggested them. And they don't sell them. I'd send it back; and get a stronger rim with 36 high quality, straight gauge spokes.

A friend of mine got that same open pro wheel from performance 2 weeks ago (but with campy hub). He had the LBS tweak it a little, but overall the bike shop said the wheel was in pretty good shape.

Thanks for the suggestions on wheel selection, but I've already ordered the 32 spoke Open Pros from Peformance.

Until the DA hub started cracking, I had no issues at all with my current wheelset. I had given some thought about going 36 spokes on the rear. But, since the crack started by the spoke holes, I'm a little curious about the possibility that increasing the # of holes drilled into the hub flange would make it just a bit less strong at that point.

What I'm wondering about now is whether or not the new wheelset should be run by the LBS before doing any serious riding.

I already mentioned that I have the same wheels, didn't have them checked and all is well. That being said, an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure and it would seem by your post that you're concerned. Pay the LBS to check them out and then ride with confidence!

Performance is great about taking stuff back.
It's your dime. But having trashed a lot of gear in my time,
I got tired of replacing it.

I've noticed that a lot of pre-built wheels tend to be on the soft side of tension. The shop should adjust it to the high end of the range. Mavic suggests about 110-130kgf. That'll make for a stronger wheel that won't go out of true as easily.
