Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey all, my girlfriend wants to get into to cycling. So, I started looking around for something for her that wouldn't break the bank and at the same time wasn't totally junky. I ended up going to Bikesdirect and saw this bike there. I then checked Sprtymama on ebay (Bikedirect owners wife I think) and found she had it at a better price. There were some other options in the same price range, but they weren't much different in the way of components and hell, lets face it, this was perty.

I saw one of these go by on the other side of the street during my ride today. It was so eye-catching I didn't even look at the rider. Hey...that's right! Ravenmore...you're in Austin, right? Was your GF out on Bee Caves today?

Nope - we still have to get the rest of her stuff. Shoes, helmet, jersey, ect.... I'm hoping this weekend to take her for a spin. First step though is learning to clip/unclip reliably, then maybe go for a short 5 to 10 mile ride. Don't want to torture her on her first ride.

Cool...good luck with it. And don't tell her there's a matching one in town...she'll want to return it! Consider taking her down to the veloway for her first ride..low stress as long as it's not too crowded.

You might want to let her try it out with out the clips first. Let her get a feel for how it handles and to learn to shift. I know that when I tried to get my wife (then gf) on a bike the clips were the biggest problem.

That's OK, a picture of her without the shoes, helmet or jersey will be fine...

Hey, sorry, those pics are just for me.

Got some Specialized Body Geometry shoes tonight for her. Can't remember which model but they were ladies specific, silver with pink accents. Had a buckle - I told her thats the way I wish I'd started instead of going cheaper and getting shoes with all velcro. I put the cleats on 'em and held the bike while she practiced clipping in and out a couple of times to see what it was like. I think she really liked the shoes.

2rodies - that's probably a good idea, but I've got the pedals on there and now she has the shoes. I think we're stuck starting off with the pedals.
