Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Litespeed was having a frame sale recently. I am not sure if it is still on. You could get yourself a sweet Ti ride by swapping your components over.

Don't let the post about Orbea being expensive fool you. Unless they've upped their price and dropped their product quality, they're great bang for the buck.

In all honesty, if I were you I'd spend some time at shops test riding bike after bike in my price range until I found one that fit and did everything I wanted it to. Then I'd buy it.

Has Specialized upgraded the wheels on their low-end carbon Roubaixes? Every review I've read complained about the Alex wheels - called them extremely mushy and flexy.

Yes they have. The Comp comes with the Shimano WH-560 which is a $379.99 wheel set and a slight step up from the WH-550 which is supposed to be a pretty good wheel. The Elite does still come with Alex wheels...just one more reason to go for the Comp over the Elite.

379 MSRP maybe, but I believe the WH-R560 has taken the place of the WH-R550 at wholesale price. Here's a ebay seller in Hong Kong selling them for $190 + 60 shipping:

Another guy for $188 from Singapore:
https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-06-WH-R5...QQcmdZViewItem

It looks a lot like the D/A 7800 wheelset, though obviously about 250-300g heavier.

It might have been just on the lower end Tarmacs, but I think Specialized has switched from the much-derided Alex wheelsets to the Ksyrium Equipe ($300 real world price) on the lower end Tarmac and Roubaix models.

For the original poster, if you can afford to buy towards the $2000 end of your price range, rather than $1500, you'll get a lot more bike. See if you can find a shop in your area that has the 2006 Felt F55 in stock.

For $2k you can choose to put more money into the frame, and get a bike with a combination of the 10-speed 105 and carbon frame, or you can use a slightly less expensive aluminum frame (the Felt is a good example, or the higher models of the specialized Allez series) with 10-speed Ultegra.

Thanks to all for the updates and tips. As geezer geometry is important to me, and at 180lbs I figure I need slightly sturdier wheels than average, I might just look closer at the Roubaix comp.

Yes, I was at the bike shop and noticed Orbea's are very expensive. It was $1600 for an orbea model with AL main fram with carbon seat stays and an ultergra package. When I told him I could get a full carbon bike for 2K, that store owner was like where. I could get a carbon bike for 2k with 105 components trek 5000, Specilzed Tarmac, Giant OCR 2 or TCR 2, Plenty out there.

I LOVE MINE!!!!

STEAL AT THAT PRICE, GO BUY IT NOW

The only thing I don't like about mine is there is absolutley nothing I can rationalize upgrading.

I love the frame, the components, the wheels, I LOVE MY R1000, I even bought another one of the Poggio seats for my exercise bike at home (Full Disclosure: I believe that makes me unique, which explains how I got it for $10).

Either of the paint jobs are sweet in their own respects, I got one of the mysterious flat Blacks.

I am of the larger variety (6'2" 220), I understand that they are on the stiff side for smaller riders. I believe that the wishbone seat stays, awesome fork and seat post add up to an awesome comfortable ride. They have been making these for a long time and have worked out the kinks, it is TIGHT, LIGHT and ready for FLIGHT!!

Oh, I really like it, wanna hear more?

I'd just ride a bunch of bikes at LBS and pick the one you like best and ignore all other advice.Different bikes ride very differently, so you want something that responds the way you want. This March, I was looking to spend $2K on a new ride. After riding 13 different bikes, I picked up a Fuji Team Pro for less that $1600. I liked it better than a number of more expensive bikes and would do it all over in a second.
