Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is there a way to secure him in there so he won't jump out and go after a rabbit or something?

I saw a woman with a dog in a fanny pack or something when I was riding yesterday, I don't know how I feel about that. She says teh dog doesn't mind, but I'm wondering how she knows that.

I knew a guy that had a Yamaha 650 Maxim and his beagle/ mutt rode on the tank everywhere with him. Had carpeting on the tank and the dog would sit up like it was no big deal.

^^^ [TongueInCheek] A dog that can fit into a fanny pack isn't technically a dog, it's a rat. It may be one of those 'designer rats' that look like dogs, but it's a rat. Darwin proved beyond a doubt that dogs could never evolve to fit a fanny pack but rats can. [/TongueInCheek]

That look really neat. Just think of how many great smells Beau is going to be able to savor as you ride along. Not only that, imagine the reaction from any dog that chases you. "Hey, what's this.... he's riding, and I'm running???? I'm doing this all wrong"

That's great!!

Is that a kiddie trailer or is it just for dogs and where did you get it?

I would love to take my boxer "Ben" for rides with me and that just might be the ticket.

Australian Cattle Dog is one of my favorite breeds, and the dog I had before Melvin was a Blue Heeler. Buzzsaw, like the rest of his breed, was so high energy, he always liked running alongside the bike a lot more than just riding. That's about the same setup I've got going on, except I usually pull my trailer with my MTB.

+2 For an animal to be a dog, it must weigh more than 15 lbs (is that about 2 stones?).

Steve
-and just what system does the stone weight belong to, the metrock

Very cool dog.
Although, I have a blue heeler as well and just don't see him being content with just sitting along on a bike ride. I'd wager he'd jump out at the first scent of a rabbit... How's it working for you?

lets see if i can remember all the questions and answer them
the trailer is a burley cub trailer, its made for towing a kid, but seems to work pretty well for Beau also. it wasn't inexpensive $370. there are less expensive trailers, but from most of the stuff i've read burley seemed to be about the best, and since i plan to use it for a long time and put a lot of miles on it i went with a product that had a good rep. i got it from my LBS, but you can get them on ebay and other online places and probably save some money.
Beau is an australian cattle dog, red heeler to be exact, maybe the same breed as blue heeler, just different color, but i'm not sure.
i just adopted him from an animal sanctuary https://www.bestfriends.org/ its a really neat place and if your ever in southern utah its worth taking the tour.
Beau is 5 years old and weighs about 50 pounds (great motivation for me to lose some wieght to help even things out lol). he's extremly mellow for a cattle dog and extremely obediant, i don't think i'll have to worry about him jumping out to chase anything. i am aware however that it could be a problem, so for now we're just taking short slow rides. i also tie his leash to the trailers roll bar, theres plenty of slack for him to lay or sit or move around. if he were to jump out after something i'd probably fall over but he wouldnt be able to take off. we'll take it slow and make sure it works for him, but i think he'll be fine.
meanwhile heres some more pics

Man, that is so cool! What a great idea, and Beau looks as if he's enjoying it - he seems to have you trained pretty well! Hmmm - let's see now there's an idea…

Er, um - both my cats have just stormed out of the room with worried expressions on their faces…

Nice pics!

I have a Burley Solo for the 4 yr. old. She loves it. I also have the Burlet Flatbed Utility Trailer. It's great for carrying stuff. I tow a trailer pretty often.

I have two dogs and now a new kitten, got the kitten as I live in the boonies and have had mice problems. I HOPE this cat will be a mouse hunter and not a lazy cat.
