Anyone in a San Francisco cycling club?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone in a San Francisco cycling club?

Hey Im a pretty new rider, but I want to get serious about riding and racing. Does anyone have any experiences as far as riding in clubs in San Francisco? I have a friend in the Olympic Club, but I don't think that's in my price range...Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

There are all sorts of bicycle clubs around the bay area but strangely enough I've never heard of one in San Francisco save the Olympic Club which doesn't really qualify in my books since they seem to only have a couple of top flight amateur racers.

I've seen references to the Twin Peaks Bicycle Club but have never seen anyone that claimed to be members except the old Una Mas' Bicycle Racing Team members.

There's something called the California Road Club but I don't know how to contact them and I don't know what sort of club it is. I think it's a small club mostly involved in racing.

For racing clubs in Northern California, you can get a listing at the NCNCA website:

https://www.ncnca.org/

Just go to the link for "Clubs" on the left side of the homepage.

It's not too bad once you get used to it. I live relatively close to McLaren Park and some of the streets leading up to it are very steep. Yes, even more steep than the course for the SF Grand Prix. Whenever I feel like doing a short, rigorous ride, I would power up to the top part of McLaren Park. I would usually be huffing and puffing by the time I get to the top. Some of the streets are so steep, that even though I can bike up to it, I'm afraid to ride down it (particularly on my road bike)!

It's not so bad. If you don't mind detours, there are plenty of not-too-steep roads that ride around most big hills. And if you want a hill, it's there for you to try.
Nice thing about a grid, there is always another road going your way.

Hills build character. But if you're a wimp, take the GG bridge over to Marin and ride the rollers over there.

Tam is way easier than Mt. Diablo in the east bay or even Mt. Hamilton in the south bay. There are probably a dozen or more climbs on the peninsula that are harder than Tam.

Fair enough, but then you find yourself in the east or south bay

If you're looking for big hills, then the peninsula is a great place to go. Take Caltrain down to Redwood City and ride up Kings Mtn. Continue on La Honda Road out towards the coast and loop back on Tunitas or Pescadero/Alpine. Lots of great stuff. Marin's hills are pretty tame and have too much traffic.
