Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strange comfort issue.

I have been riding my Cervelo R2.5 for a few months now......1,500 or so miles. I rode with the stem flipped up for the first week and it was very comfortable but a bit "old man" looking. I flipped the stem down and actually preferred the ride. It was quite comfortable with the stem flipped down and I had very good power. I had ridden the bike this way for the past few months with no complaints aside from a sore butt from time to time due to I thought....the saddle. About 2 weeks ago I started experiencing pain that seemed to radiate from deep in my pelvis out to my upper butt/lower back and hips. The pain was not terrible but kept me from enjoying any ride much over 20 miles.
Last night I flipped my stem back up just to see how it would effect my pain. Today I rode a 40 mile loop with the stem flipped up and I felt great. Even my saddle issues seemed to greatly disappear. I am trying to figure out why after riding low for months and months is my body just now rejecting this? Has this happened to anyone else? I just turned 40 Friday and I hate to think this is the begining of old age...LoL

As a note, since owning this bike I have lost about 30 pounds and should be getting in better shape.

You ought to see a Doc. Sounds like sacroiliac.
It's a big bundle of nerves buried deep in your ass.
Icing it down helps, but it takes a lot of icing to get through
your butt. There are some other things it might be; get it checked out.

gary i am surprised that an experienced cyclist like yourself would miss such an easy solution to a potentially crippling problem- of course you need to trade in your R2.5 for an R3.0,or even a surer cure, a bayonne. I am going friday for my fitting, either for a 2.5, 3.0 or look 585, not sure which yet.

Hate to say it, but I've had similar symptoms since September. Got an MRI and I have a ruptured disc. What's weird is that I haven't had much back pain, mostly stinging pain and numbness down my left leg. I'm working to avoid surgery and riding the bike (former runner) feels great while riding, but I have nasty muscle spasms when finished. The diagnosis (for me anyway) is to work on strengthening my core, doing more stretching and riding it out (so to speak). Of course, the epidural steriod injection also helped! I'm 42 and reasonably fit.

Did you pick up anything heavy recently? That's very similar to what I have with a disc problem. But with a high stem I can ride as much as I want to. It's really a question for a doctor.
