'Performance Underwear' at Woe-Mart: Experiment with Base Layer on the Cheap
Had been wanting to try a base layer under my long sleeve jersey for cool weather riding but everything I saw was pretty expensive....
Today at Wal-Mart just happened upon a rack of long sleeve 'Performance Underwear' by 'Athletic Works'.
Cost = $11.88
Wore one today in 50 degree weather and liked it. Cationic Polyester (81%) and Elastane (19%). Seams appear to be well-stitched together (presumably by slave labor). Feels like silk and fits like a sausage skin. Kills the wind. Went back and got a few more.
According to the label, in addition to the advanced 'moisture management technology', the 'compression aspects of undergarment help prevent muscle fatigue and injury...'
Anyway, it wears well, does the job on the cold wind, and at that price it's worth a try if you can get past the issue about Wal-Mart being evil and all...

I bought 4 of the short sleeved ones for like 8$each. They seem to hold up well. Makes it hard to spend 30$ on under armor.

I still have to laugh at all the people wearing compression shirts in UNC's weight room. The draw for wearing such shirts in the weight room has little to do with the "effectiveness in muscle recovery" and such things, I'm afraid.

I will check out the walmart brand but I have found that the craft base layers to be the best in terms of comfort and keeping me warm.. Sierra trading post has them on sale.. I already bought a couple..

Yea both Target and Wal-Mart have nice lines of base layer type clothing. I am always watching the 30%, 50%, and 75% off racks at Target for the stuff and buy a bunch when it gets there. Even better when you pay $2-$7 for them.

I prefer more of a waffle weave so that it traps warm air when it is cold. Of course, 50 degrees is shorts and short sleeve jersey weather around here... no need for a base layer with that kind of heat, unless it is to keep cool.

The fake UnderArmour at Wal-Mart kicks ass. I've been wearing it for a year.
Heck, if you wanted you could buy a long sleeve shirt and cut of the sleeves to have some poor man's arm warmers.

I haven't been in a Wal Mart in almost a year. I'm shooting for the rest of my life so the Target one will have to do. Not that they're any better......

I tend to agree with caligurl, not that I like it loose as hell, but not that tight.
I'd rather give up a little aerodynamics for comfort.

Well, I just went and got one of those shirts to try out on my commute tomorrow. I've outgrown most of my cycling gear (read: gotten fat) so I'll let y'all know how it goes.
I'm wearing it right now and the first thing that comes to my mind is that I look like John Goodman about to make a bobsled run....I'll give you all a second to let that visual sink in.
Oh well, at least I'm back on the bike and hopefully I'll be dry and warm tomorrow when I get to work.

That poor, poor luge. It never saw us coming. In retrospect, the worst part was the deep grooves in the ice that were left after our run.
