Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Someone school me on tubular valve stems?

Well, I just bought a nice 2nd hand set pf Zipp 909's and I don't know how to put air in that weird lookin valve stem. Also; where can i get that thin piece of plastic that covers the milled out window for the rear disc? Thanks

It's called a presta valve.
You need a pump with a presta head.
you could also get a presta/schrader adaptor.
Best would be to check out what sheldon brown has to say.

99 Litespeed Ultimate
00 P2 Cervelo TT
Both Full Shimano Dura-Ace Carbon tricked

and you've never used presta valves? Seems odd to me.

I don't think he's talkin about the presta valve...
Are you reffering to the valve extender that goes on top of the standard or extra length presta to accommodate the super deep rims?
And there is an adpater that you can buy from trisports that will let you get to that valve that sits in the disc wheel.

Ahhh yes....finally an intellegent response! Yes it looks like a thin hollow aluminum tube about 3/16" in diameter and it's about 2 inches long. And yes to the other geniuses I do know what a presta valve is .

What you describe is just an extender that the manufacturers sell to use with deeeep profile rims. It screws right to the top of a presta valve, just leave the presta open and screw the extender on top, put clamp the standard presta pump to it and pump away. That's what's worked for me...
