Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

anyone try this or something like it? I'm thinking this might fill a nice void between a longsleeve marino wool base layer and a fleece lined long sleeve jersey. This layer is normally filled by a polypro T-shirt that does next to nothing on 25-40 degree rides.

https://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?p...jor=4&minor=13

EDIT: I am also thinking this (the sleeveless version) might make a great 3-season base under a regular jersey in spring/fall as well (price justification)

I use a Craft windproof base layer when temps are in the 40s and 50s. Since it fits snugly under your jersey, it is much more breathable and much more aerodynamic than a wind jacket or vest. In freezing weather, however, I think a full jacket will be warmer.

my wind jacket breathes like it has the flu . I'm hoping to push the need for it down to sub 30 and was hoping this would fit the ticket. Kind of an expensive to "try out" though.

I have a Craft windproof layer also and I love it. Fits nice and really takes care of the wind. In fact, I have so much Craft stuff that I could open a store. But they all get much use even in everyday non cycling life.

I got all (15-20 pieces) of mine at Sierra Trading Post. I'll check to see if they have any left and I'll post a link.

Also, here's the Free Shipping riddle
Key Code 40523. Catalog Winter 2005
In '59 something came between Queen Charlotte and the Prince of Wales.
CONFIRMED ANSWER: US boundary

Key Code goes into key code.

"US Boundary" goes into comment section at checkout.

They email you saying that your shipping has been credited.

Be warned that once or twice (out of about 30 orders) this has not worked for me. But it usually does.

They have also had some Swix Windblock base layers on sale. I have both the Craft Pro S3 and the Swix windproof base layers and I can't tell the difference between them when I have them on.

I have the Craft longsleave windblock version and it works great. Bought it to break the wind on cold days without the weight and extra layer of a wind jacket. A sleaveless version (I think Craft has just long and short sleave versions) would be a nice addition though.

These are excellent....we brought them into the shop as an experiment. Now on our third order. People like them as they also have the wind protection on the arms. I had a Craft shirt, and this one is better, I think due to the arm protection.

Seems to me that it would be preferrable to wear a wool baselayer and a windproof jacket or shirt. When you switch these around I would not think would be thermally is as efficient. It blocks wind of course but, the outer fleece garment is not doing much since the wind is removing any trapped heat.

I like the Ibex, craft, etc., baselayer (or mid-layer shirts on colder days) with something like the REI Mistral jacket. Thin, sleek, windproof and very efficient.

Another cold weather comment: Smartwool socks work well. I wear them in winter and summer (prefer coolmax ones in summer.) Not to plug Sierra Trading Post again but I haven't found them cheaper anywhere else.

I've been just ordering my Craft stuff right from Craft. I have several pieces including their cold weather boots, Pro Beanie, and base layers

https://www.craft-usa.com

This thing is great for days that have changing conditions. I use mine all the time

One thought about windproof stuff. It can get hot and if it's under a lot of other clothing, it will be impossible to adjust/vent. A windstopper vest like Euro mentions is great as a final layer on a dry day over everything else. PI used to make them (with a nice high collar!)..probably still do.

Sorry to revive an old-ish thread, but I just bought a Craft S3 long sleeve windproof base layer and did two rides with it. The thing is just absolutely awesome. among other things, the windproof layer is slightly bunched, so it maintains a little loft, away from your body, creating some dead air space between you and the elements. Highly recommended.

You can also get UA (Under Armour) which I wear as a base layer for wicking away sweat. Bought the same price and every so often you get a good deal on E-Bay on UA wear.

UA is fine for what it is designed for, but I don't think they have any windproof base layers.

I think the windproof base layers like Craft work great. Because they are close to your body, they are much more breathable and have a wider temperature range than a jacket or vest.
