Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

logical or excessive?

k, here's the scoop, I have 2 road bikes right now, one as my race bike (full ultregra) and one that I just bought the frame for to build up as a backup/training bike. However for a while I've been wanting a bike I can put higher end components on. I just found a specialized s-works frameset for sale for fairly cheap, almost brand new that looks absolutely HOT! So, should I save my money and just build up my backup bike or should I get the s-works and throw some higher end equipment on it and sell my backup frameset. Considering that I have become totally addicted to racing and want to take the 2006 year to a whole new level would it be logical to build up a higher end race bike or is it gonna be excessive? I'm actually tempted to keep all three road frames but that would definitely be excessive.

I would sell the back up and go high end. You only live once! I'm doing the same. Selling one bike i have to buy a super high end (finally!!). Let us be brothers in debt if we have to

of course. if you'd really like the s-works, go get it before it's gone. think about this; if you don't, a month from now you'll be kicking yourself for not pulling the trigger and getting it. and build it up to an even better race bike. what better trainer could you possibly have than last year's race bike? sounds like a win-win to me

Keep the "Backup" frame and get the S-works. Just build the back up as you come along cheap parts.

You can never have too many bikes. If I had my way (and money), I'd have like 12 bikes, each serving its own purpose.

Now you know how I went from 2 to 5 and counting.

Might as well keep the backup and get the S-Works.

I'm guessing that you've made the all-to-common mistake of allowing your bikes to sleep overnight in the same room. When you do that they have a tendency to multiply. How do you suppose that all of the different kinds of bikes that we have today came to be? It all started when somebody let his mountain bike sleep in the same room with his road bike.
