9spd and 10spd....

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

9spd and 10spd....

k, I know this topic has probably been exhausted but is one more gear really worth the extra $100-$200? I just bought a Specialized S-Works frameset that I"m gonna be building up but I can't seem to justify spending $400 on a set of dura ace 10spd shifters or $300 on a set of 10spd ultegra shifters when I can spend $150-200 max on a set of 9spd ultegra shifters. It obviously doesn't stop there, then you've got brakes, derailleurs, cranksets, which by the way what's the point if you can use a 10spd crankset or brakes or vs versa with a 9spd groupo? Does anyone ACTUALLY notice the difference or is this just Corporate America trying to screw everyone over?

I think it really comes down to what kind of terrain you ride, and how picky you are about your cadence.... I ride a 9 spd mostly because the quality of parts only begin to be available at the 9 spd level (rather than 8 spd). I will NOT be switching to 10 spd anytime soon. But that's just me....I'm no pro.

I doubt anybody needs the extra gear, but the 10 speed group in each of the lines is better overall than the group it replaces. Enough better to justify the cost has to be a decision only you can make. I've owned D/A 7,8,9, and 10 speed groups. Each was lighter, and smoother than the group it replaced. ( discounting the weight of the brifters compared to the downtube shifters on the 8 speed group.)

It's not just the extra gear, it's the incremental jump between gears. For road bikes, it shifts pretty smoothly. Interestingly enough, some mountain bikers have found that the 9 speed does not shift or hold up as well as 8 speed.

I know that older stuff does stay in circulation for many years after it has been replaced with newer stuff, like 7 speed to 8 speed to 9 speed and so forth. However, 10 speed is the current component design and parts will be current in both their supply and designs.
