Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ovoleg, I don't get pleasure in the death of animals, quite the opposite. There is no need to attack me. Just showing that there is real danger in squirrels that jet across a cyclist's path. Nice to know that you feel sympathy towards the rider, though... oh, wait...

This animal ran into a rider's wheel. Darwin had plans for him.

We all know what happened to the squirrel...what about the rider? By the looks of the fork and bar tape it looks like it could have been a very painful impact.

that's it.. my next wheel is going to have 87 spokes....

low spoke count my ass....
Thing is, it would be really hard for a squirrel to fit through my wheel when it's not moving. Once it is, I'd imagine it's pretty much impossible...

Oh good, since I'm a large predator (omnivore actually) I'm in the clear, I was beginning to become concerned.

Gray squirrel is nothing but a climbing rat with a bushy tail and a good PR man.

Here the season's open from November 12th-March 15th. Daily limit 12, possession limit 24.

Many good recipes for squirrel.

Hope the rider's alright.

Gee, I never thought about this when I captured a pesky squirrel near my house. I relocated him/her to the woods next to the local bike path that we frequently travel. Hope the squirrel doesn't decide to 'get even' and attack my bike next time I'm there.

Dude, sorry, but it's life. The squirrel was dumb, ran through the front of a bicycle wheel. Nature isn't nice, or caring, or sympathetic. Otherwise, natural selection woudl never work...

Does $300 cover both wheels or just the front?

You really have to watch out for those furry suicide bombers.
I almost clocked a squirrel this past fall. Darn close. I knew it would be ugly.

Look @ the rear wheel, chain & cassette area. Something looks odd there. I can't place my finger on it.

Sorry, a squirrel through the spokes is funny. It isn't like the guy threw his wheel sideways at the squirrel to capture it. No, death isn't funny. But, lets face it, squirrel origami is something you don't see everyday. If I can figure out how to put a picture on this, I will post a picture of a squirrel that got caught in the disk brakes of a MTB. Same result: dead squirrel.

BTW - I used to think that the ground squirrels in my backyard were cute too. Then one of them dug through my sprinkler system and cost me over $500 in damage. Now they make great targets for my 22. I have perfected a 15yd head shot. Does killing the squirrel bother me? NO!!!!! In the contest of squirrel verses my $500, the squirrel losses every time.

Maybe the front derailer cable was snapped... Looks like a lot of slack to me... That and the chain is off...

Come on, guys. Look carefully at the down tube in the top picture. Use a ruler if needed. The down tube is bent. The bike damage is from running into something, like the back of car. Afterwards someone thought it would be funny to stage a squirrel scene using the wrecked bike.

Until someone show me otherwise, I say:

1. If a obstruction in the spoke hits the back of the fork, spokes will break long before the fork. I've gotten twigs branches caught in my spokes, 4-5 spokes broke before I was thrown over the handlebar. The fork was not even damaged except for paintwork where the twigs hit. I should know.

2. The squirrel will break long before the spoke. I can not produce any proof for it, because I would get into trouble for trying. But looking at how piano wire garrote can decapitate a human through 2 inch solid bone, I think squirrel stands no chance.

I don't really see how the top tube is bent, but it is possible the bike sustained some damages when it crashed. I agree with you though on the whole cutting action of the spokes, I decapitated a squirrel a few weeks back with hardly any effort or any jolt to the bike. Basically the squirrel turned into my spokes, -which promptly carried him up where he met his swift demise between the spoke and the back of my fork. I could definitely feel the impact through my steering column, but I didn't lose control or anything like that. -Then again, it was its' neck, not the bulk of it's body that got caught, if it had it may have been different.

My thinking is that if it was faked they would have taken a little more time to get some decent pictures. I don't personaly see any bent tubes anywhere but if it is a fake....BRAVO.....Good job.
