Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

noob here (needing advice for first road bike)

i was given an old road bike (i imagine it was from the 70s because it has wing nuts) and i completely fell in love with riding. i want to buy another bike, but i'm young and i have a very low budget. my local bike shop is selling a used schwinn varsity for 185. opinions?

If you want to begin a weight training program, get it - but somewhere else. Varsities weigh about 40 pounds, and can routinely be had for $20.00 at yard sales. You could find a MUCH nicer bike for that sum.

The sydney quote below was tailor made for this reply.

Try craigslist. The Varsity was low end bike 30 years ago. I know, I rode one for 10 years. I agree it is worth about $20. For $185 you should be able to get a fairly decent working 10 year old or less bike. Stick with steel, they age better, except for rust. In your area, I doubt that is a problem.

Not an opinion on your choice of bike, but I'd recommend staying clear of that LBS.

Look up steel or aluminum, whatever falls in your budget. But, try to consult with us first for expert opinions. Really, we'll let you know if you're getting ripped off or not. Have fun!
