Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever ordered from outside your country?

Am interested in ordering some cycling equipment from Europe. Good availability and LOW PRICES.
Have never ordered from outside USA.

1)Import duties?
2)Custom duties?
3)foreign tax?

How/when (if any of these apply) do these get charged? Would they show up at the time I place the order online??

Yes ... I order from the US at least once a year.

The actual amount of the order is taken off my credit card in Canadian dollars when I place the order (including shipping and handling, but not including taxes or anything else).

The order is shipped to Canada, and usually sits at the border for a day or so while customs decides what to do with it.

Then the order is shipped to my local post office complete with a bill for all duties and taxes, plus a $5 handling fee for the privilege of having customs draw up the bill for me. The total of all of that usually runs around $30 Canadian.

When I go to the post office to pick up my order, that's when I pay the custom's bill.

So for every order I consider placing with companies in the US, I have to calculate the exchange, plus the additional $30, to determine if it is worth it or not.

I got a shipment of FREE clothing from Italy (long story) and paid about $85 duty which Fed Ex billed me for. Total for the goods (which they had to declare on their end) was over $500...jesrseys, warmups, sweatshirt and bibs.

Then I got a special seat sent to me from Fizik in Italy, paid nada.

If you are ordering clothing, look out. I suspect that's why the availability of team kits has been so bad.

Believe it or not, my clothing got hung up for a month in customs while they tried to figure out what the chamois in the team bibs I was getting was made from.

They thought it was leather...

It's hit and miss for some reason.

I ordered a shirt from CSC/Riis Cycling as a gift. Can wait for the story on that one....

I have.

I ordered from bikebuster.com in May. I did not have to pay anything. It took a while for it filter through the USPS and customs. You will have sign for the package at the post office.
Funny thing though, in May I paid 27 in shipping and now it is 92 bucks to order from Denmark.
I am trying to find out if my not getting charged a duty was a fluke......

I've ordered items from Australia, Hong Kong and Canada. To date, I haven't had to pay any duty or taxes, but all these sold for less than $100. No problems with the sellers and everything arrived in a reasonable time frame.

Purchased a couple of Brooks saddles at different times from a fellow in Canada & got his superlow price without paying any taxes or duties. Both times were under $100.00

Rarely a need to order from outside the USA. BUt there have been a few times where i've bought ebay items from canada, like handlebars. Took almost 2 weeks to get here, i think the package was held up at customs.

I bought a waterproof camera case for my point and shoot Canon digital from a guy in Hong Kong. Got it for about half what it goes for here and it was at my door 3 days after I paid for it.

That's not to say that every transaction will be this smooth but I was willing to risk it in this case.

Good luck!

Yeah- I ordered off letour.fr for one of the Tour de France races (maybe 2000 or 2001?). I ordered a bunch of water bottles, a tote, and a hat. It was under a hundred bucks, but by the time customs got finished with it and charged me all that import stuff and duty crap, it was well over a hundred bucks. I'll never order overseas again.

Anyone dealt with St. John Street Cycles? Their prices on Carradice stuff seem VERY good, but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle.

I ordered about $600 in cycling clothing in the last month from a site in Germany and I only paid for the items and the shipping. No tax, vat or duties.

I have also purchased items from Canada and have not paid anything besides the price of the item and shipping.

I have shipped items to friends overseas and marked items as a "GIFT" and every once in a while they will have to pay a "DUTY" Fee... However, I have yet to pay anything extra for goods shipped to the US.
