Campagnolo pronunciation question.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So, how is Record supposed to be pronounced?

Re-chord (Wreck-ord)

Record (as in record player)

I've always known it and pronounced it as the former but the yahoos as Performance pronounce it incorrectly...IMO.

no offense, but these are the lamest threads imho--you're never going to figure out the pronounciation of everything, and even if you did you'd hear another word next week

why don't you call campy and ask "is there a gruppo above chorus" (if you can pronounce "chorus")?

seriously--cycling is an international sport, and primarily NOT an American sport, you're bound to mispronounce things--don't sweat it

I regularly say "and what about, how do you pronounce this, how much is that?" at LBS--nobody expects you to be a master at linguistics, or whatever

lighten up--it'll be okay if you mispronounce something, really

I was just curious.

Lighten up...

So, is it Zig-u-rat? Or Zig-uh-rat? Or perhaps Zig-ugh-rat?

no YOU lighten up!!!!

but seriously, and this is for the other 200 people browsing the forum right now--IT IS OKAY IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRONOUNCE AN ITALIAN, FRENCH, OR SPANISH WORD--it'll be okay

I can assure you if you polled several LBSs in your area--they would disagree as well, no big deal

Well, since I have some of this stuff for the bike I'm building up I thought it would be a good idea to actually be able to pronounce it correctly. What a concept huh?

well how do you pronounce "tomato" or "either" ???

pronunciation and dialects, in particular, are not written in stone--lbs pronunciation nazis are a joke

some lamer at lbs asked me what kind of frame I was building up, I said "sir-ott-uh" (which is the way it is pronounced) and the lbs pronunciation nazi says "ohh, a seer-ohhh-tia"... I almost fell on the floor laughing (I didn't say anything, but it was hilarious nonetheless).

my point: don't try so hard, and if you OWN something--pronounce it however you want

Reading tru your posts, what I feel is that the pronounciation "problem" will only be a "problem" if you are in the wrong "circle" or at the wrong side of the food chain. Thriatlon geeks will laugh at "ordinary" people's mispronounciation or mishandling of any aspect of their sport(s), road performers will laugh at thiathletes, posh LSB vendors will put on their poshiest faces at customers they feel are not able to buy upper-scale components; it all comes down to "prejudice", this is what I think.

Was there another thread on this very subject...

( A LOT !!! )

It's Record as in Record player... Performance is based in North Carolina... perhaps it is the accent that is killing the name.

Cam (as in camshaft)...pag (as in pag with soft a )...nolo (as in polo).

Someone here had a link to a mp3 file in their signature along the lines of "Say it like a Sicilian". Anyone remember who it was? I tried searching for it but couldn't find it.

Veloce...

Vell-Oh-Chee?
Vell-Osh?

How about vay-low-chay, and try cahm-pahn-yolo (as in yo-yo...). Really, now, have y'all heard the French and Italians, not to mention the Japanese, try to pronounce nearly anything in English? The Dutch, Belgians, and Germans seem to get the hang of it all right.

This Texan will now get back to butchering Spanish.

Adios, amigos...
