best cycling magazine...
I want to subscribe to a cycling magazine this year and Im looking for one that does a good job of covering the pro-scene (I am not familiar with this at all and want to become more acquainted with it). I had a couple free samples of some magazine and did not like it at all. Ive heard it called the worst cycling magazine. I was at Barnes and Noble and saw pro-cycling magazine (I think its called) and it looked really nice with a lot of coverage on the sport. I am looking for something that covers the sport more than something that has product reviews. I would not mind the occasional training tips and that kind of stuff, but mainly coverage of races both in the US and abroad...like I said, I hate riding with people and not knowing what they are talking about when they discuss the pro-scene, etc.

cycling plus.
little bit of racing, lots of reviews, real world bikes not
just the creme de la creme. Something of a vintage section
that covers not just old bikes and components but vintage racing
etc. so there is a bit of heritage in the mag.
Good writing style and reviews that are not adverse to say
something is a piece of garbage if thats what it is.
I also like Asphalt very much but its a bit too sporadic for
my tastes.

I like Asphalt magazine very much. It's published 4 times a year (approx. quarterly). Yes, it's a little sporadic, but for the recreational road rider, it's a great magazine. And, no, I don't work for them.

Buycycling - designed for people who don't cycle or who just started.
Procycling - designed for people with an IQ of less than 80. Typical question to a pro racer: "What's your favorite color?"
Cycle Sport - Good coverage of racers and racing but otherwise not much else.
Asphalt - I think I saw this magazine once and it was a picture book with only enough writing in it to get the postal rate.
Rivendell Reader - A little too "green" for my tastes. Grant loves to be all inclusive as long as it isn't someone that likes to hammer on a bike. Strange since he likes to hammer on a bike....
The long and the short of it is that there isn't a general bicycling magazine like there used to be and I miss them.

I used to buy several off the shelf for the very same reason. I didn't know which one I'd like. So after a couple of months, I subsribed to Cyclesport USA.
But in the 2-3 months when I was buying several publications at newstand prices, I easily surpassed the annual subscription fee for the magazine of my choice.

ProCycling probably has the best and most in depth coverage IMO, but it's over $100 a year.
I subscribe to VeloNews. I would prefer a little more depth to it but it's a pretty good magazine.
