Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Covering the Disco stickers

My cycling team just bought a slew of Trek 5.9s in the blue and silver colors, only to discover that they come with the Team Discovery logo on the seat tube.

First of all, WHY do they do that on their top of the line bikes?

Immediately, we went to work designing a sticker to COVER the Disco stickers. Those should be ready soon.

I'm curious: Who here would cover the logo? Who wouldn't?

BTW, our team is Cat 1-2 with some Masters. We're not sponsored by Disco, so we were all in agrement that they had to be 'obscured'.

I fully applaud your decision. If you cover up the Trek stickers, you'll be all set.

You see EventServices, there is a curve - the better you get on the bike (you're a 1 or 2) the less you want to wear a pro team kit and represent pro teams that you are not a part of. The funny thing is that the people that will never be a 1 or a 2 fight this tooth and nail and will spout endlessly about how team kits are so cool and riding Lances exact bike ('cept w/ a triple of course) is what cycling is all about.

I guess this may be a bit elitist,, but there seems something inherently 'chumpy' about wearing all that pro team stuff. (unless you're on the team). But hey, to each their own.

To ward off the masses here, it's all good that people are riding, and the folks paying retail for Treks and Disco kits help the bike industry financially and yadda yadda yadda.

I'm cat 6 and all I wanna wear is my USMC jersey or my Arrogant Bastard Ale jersey. IMO, the USMC jersey is the only jersey out there that's worth a damn anyway. All your kits and cat 1/2 sponsers can kiss my a55 -> (_*_)

Hmm I guess Specialized is going the right route putting the removable Gerolsteiner logos on the Tarmacs and Roubaixs. This thread is exactly why they say they are doing it. Props to Specialized...I still think they should supply the permanant decals for us poseurs that are never going to race the bike, without you having to contact customer service.

You're having stickers made to cover up the Discovery stickers? I'd just use black duct tape...

Well, they don't. The blue/silver is the "Team" paint job and has to be ordered specifically that way (as an "option" but not Project One) as the Team paint was one of the available colors. The '05 5.9 Madone was red/gray with very little stickers on it.

You guys got the "optional" paint job, LOL

Not much choice to think about is there? By USCF rules, if they aren't a sponsor, they can't be on your kit. Black electical tape slapped over the sticker would be pretty 'bro' looking

Why didn't someone just order the regular paint job, what they requested (or received) is the special team paint job. Send them back, problem solved as the disco paint is not on all of the 5.9 Madones.

Actually, I was stating my case for frugality. But, if you choose to politicize duct tape, by all means...

I finally got fed up with all the decals when a couple started peeling on my billboard of a bike - the Trek 5500 - that I'm getting it repainted specifically to clean it up and tone down the signage.

Take a look at ViperZ's Trek - nice and clean.

Back in high school when I played basketball (which fits my body better than bikes do), there were "open gym" nights in the summer and fall when anyone could come and play. Two courts usually, one where the better and more serious players played, and another one for the chumps and scrubs. The funny part about this: guess which court had far more players wearing NBA jerseys? It was the not-so-good court. Leading to the epithet, "jersey ball". Kinda like the not-so-good cyclist decked out in CSC or Disco gear. Problem is, with cyclists, we can't say that their parents spoiled them and bought them all the team gear.

Interesting. Their "stock" shop bikes do not come with logos, unless they just very recently changed that approach. It went back to the Postal days when USPS told Trek they wanted to be paid for the logos they were putting on the shop bikes. Looks like you may have gotten a run of the "real" frames... They've got a warehouse full of frames for the team.

Hey, you could always send them back and tell them to stick their logos...

i'd just leave it as is. i think that covering it up won't look as good.

i'm a huge fan of having no sponsor billboard stuff on my bike, but man it's one sweet bike and putting additional stuff on that frame just seems wrong.

Is it possible to remove those stickers with a heat gun without harming the paint?

Yes. But you'll ruin the clearcoat that seals them to the frame.

Who really gives a crap about the stickers or whether someone wears a team jersy and is not sponsored. Cover up your stickers for your Cat 1 races, and leave the rest of us alone! Bunch of dam elitists!! I don't usually let stuff on BF get to me, but a few of you guys act like racing snobs. It really is starting to piss me off! Get over yourselves. Geeessh.
