Exercise Bike suggestions?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Exercise Bike suggestions?

I have been thinking of getting a upright exercise bike. I want to use it just to work on my spinning and help stay in shape, and help strengthen my knees. Anyway my wife has a Schwinn recumbant exercise bike that has been excellent. I also figure that a traditional exercise bike would be better for me since its a similar position of my road bike. Any suggestions on brands or models. Would like to stay below $500.

Thanks

Steve

Nothing under $500.00 is worth buying new. Buy a trainer for your bike or find a used quality exercise bike.

We had a recumbant that needed replaced last year, so we decided on the Giant Tempo. It's a spinner and with the videos is an excellent workout, much more so then the recumbant. I wear bike shoes and clip in and usually wear bike shorts as well. We've been very pleased, it's well made and solid. A bit more then your budget, but I think we paid just over $700.

I may look into rollers. I have never tried rollers or a trainer. I really like the convience of having a seperate exercise cycle. I just think I would use it more and ride longer. I bought my wife her recumbant a little over a year ago and my wife uses it at least 5 days a week. She is not a cyclest she just likes the exercise. It is a Schwinn and our dealer also sells giants. I may look into it.

Thanks

I looked in my local paper a couple of years ago and got a nice, used "Vision" brand exercise bike from a gym that was closing. I paid $400 and I like it better than the life Cycles that my Golds gym has. I know there are a few places that sell refurbished comercial gym equiptment for a good price. "Big Fitness" is one place, I think they have a web site.

Another option is to have some sort of beater bike or second bike on the trainer.

I have been using a lifecycle for the past ten years. Not ideal, but it does the job.

Saris makes the most bike-like exercise bikes, but they are pricey.
