Do you upgrade to impress men?
This is somewhat expected in sports where equipment makes a difference. The point is that you are not impressing any hot chics, but other married men.
So why do you keep upgrading to equipment like Cervelo or Look when you are perfectly fine with your Trek??

I'm a reverse snob. So I ride a steel LeMond with a triple and drive a 13 year old pick up. OK, my dual 650C recumbent is titanium, but I don't know how that happened. But, really, how much snob value is there in a recumbent? So it's still reverse snobbery.
Besides, don't put words in my mouth. I'll take a hot chick over a married man, any day.

Impress?
The stuff I buy doesn't even earn notice from my cycling-crazed friends.

Hmm, there is a nice tred of "no's".
I feel like you guys need to start coming out and accepting the fact that you guys want to impress other men so you can feel "higher up" in the ranks

Sorry, but as Eric Clapton says, "it's in the way that you use it".
Quite frankly, if someone is impressed by a store-bought item, that's silly of them.

When I get a nicer bike, it will be to help me climb faster. Purely because faster is more fun. I'm not out to impress anyone, and I don't care if anyone notices. Frankly, most people on the street can't tell the difference between the Walmart road bike and a high end one anyway when they see a bike going by. It's all the same thing to them.

cycle components like other fetish goods are only cool to people of a similar disposition. If i told you i just got a Bill Evans LP "New Jazz Conceptions" would you care? Thats a 1k lp right there. just as a audiophile (the ones that like analog stuff) is hot for LPs a biker is hot on bike stuff. i know a few audiophiles and while they like looking at other's collections, what they really care about is there own. i dont think bikes arent much different.
anycase if you want to impress me just buy me campy chorus

Was in the bike shop yesterday and the sales people were eagerly following this one guy wearing the TDf yellow jersey (no it was not Lance).
When asked what kind of saddle, pedals and handlebar he wanted on his bike he replies "Just give me the most expensive ones you have". I think the sales guys were suitably impressed.

The guys that I'd want to impress aren't impressed with doo-dads, but whether you can bridge a gap and pull the train.
