Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Top Speed

Just wondering what you guys & gals have had out of your bikes?
My current record is 83.8kmh (could have gone faster but ran out of road).
Highest one whilst filming was 50mph as on my group page.

If you have video of them please upload to my yahoo group:

Ride like the wind!

55 mph in a tuck, on day 2 of the 2004 Everest Challenge. I had a jacket on, which was preventing higher speeds.

This is well discussed topic. If you do a search you'll find several threads on it.

My top speed was 62mph decending Mullholland between Kannan and Encinal.

I hit 48 on a downhill this summer and I was on the brakes because there were a lot of other riders on the road.

The other day when I was descending down Old San Marcos an impressed motorcycle decided to pace me. When he cought up to me afterwards told me he was going 55, and I was pulling away from him in the corners. My spedometer disagreed, said I only had a max of mid-40s.

I'd be soiling my pants if I was doing over 60 mph on a bicycle.

Vegas odds favor the accuracy of your computer over that of the motorcycle's speedo; motorcycle speedometers are notoriously optimistic, especially if the bike's been re-geared.

62.3 going down Big Mountain Road in Whitefish. One of the sections has about 3/4 of a mile between switchbacks. This was done on a 1996 Bianchi Trofeo. SHAKY.

That's awesome! I calculate that would take over 380 watts (closer to 400 considering the tight unbanked turns and less than ideal cycling surface of most running tracks) for a 150 lb (68 kg) rider. So that's a power to weight ratio of about 5.6 or more, which is national class.

This is sort of like braging about kicking a 14 yard field goal after reading some of the speeds posted above but here in flat-land Minnesota 44 mph is my top.

Well, its a pretty big oval, and textured kinda like a tennis court. Powertap on a friends bike at that same speed put me at around 335 watts. On my track bike im not sure if it would be more or less, track bike has more saddle to stem drop, and no drag from a chain snaking thru a derailler under tension. I think my power to weight is closer to around 4.9-5 watts/kg. Im about 165lbs at the moment, I was like 160lbs that day I think. Ive tried about 5 other times to beat that and havent been able to do it, only run one full attempt since and only did about 25.2mph. That's the thing thats hard, is showing up ready to go and having a good first 8-10 laps, if those suck, not much use at continuing, not gonna make up any time.

What really really is hard to fathom is elite pro's are doing around 5mph faster, I dont know where they get that kind of power w/o drugs.

How did you hit 62 on that section of Mullholland? The only place on Mullholland where that speed can even be touched might be somewhere in the final 7 miles going down to the beach. Back in November there was a race called the Red Bull Road Rage and the fastest speed reached was 58 and that was on Tuna Canyon which is much steeper than any section of Mullholland.

We had a group of six guys and two of us hit 60+ mph. If you are heading to the beach on Kannan and turn right on Mulholland there is a fairly long steep section about 1.5 or so before Encinal. We were sharing the draft and the other four guys all topped 55 so I feel confident that my spedo was correct. FWIW Tuna is a lot twister than this section of Mulholland, Decker from Mulholland road to Westlake Blvd has a couple of sections that are steeper than Tuna but you could never attain the speeds you hit on Tuna because of the turns. Conversely you can go faster down Stunt because it's straighter than Tuna.

Ok this makes a bit more sense with a group. From Kanan to Encinal is only .9 miles but the downhill section you speak of is only .6 before it starts the slight right turn climb. If you climbing up from Rock Store this also a good section to pick up more distance from anyone who was dropped on the climb up.
